Although we have a newer Dometic 1350 in our rig we have experienced the same problems occasionally. We normally run the frig on electric and on number 4 setting out of 5. We have found that by adding a small battery operated fan that we direct to blow on the fins keeps the unit constant.
It pushes the air around and keeps the fins from frosting up. We use rechargeable batteries so we don't burn thru them.
The new Dometics have 4 fans on the outside above the coils that run a lot to cool the compartment.
There is a balancing act as when it is very hot out and your frig is on the sunny side even on gas it will have a tough time cooling because the coils cannot shed the heat enough and when it is too cold out they need to get hot enough to circulate the ammonia in the unit so you will need to use propane.
If this things ever does crap out we will put a residential unit in.
