Wheel bearings question

Hi folks, I'm going to grease my wheel bearings this weekend before my next trip and was wondering what y'all's process is for raising the wheel up. I've got a six point hydraulic leveling system and was thinking I would just raise one side at a time so I can rotate the wheel while greasing, per Lipperts recommendation on the ez lube hubs. I've seen others suggest putting a jack under the axle but that seems like it could have problems as well. I'm sure this has been discussed a ton but hadn't found an exact answer. Thanks!

Andy,

I use the level up to get the wheels off the ground.

Recommend you pull the drums, clean and inspect the brakes and pack the bearings by hand. The brake inspection is very important. It is very easy to pump grease past the seal onto the brakes.

I always used a bottle jack between the U bolts when doing my EZ lube. No problem. But only because I did not have hydraulic leveling.

Hey AZ Traveller, thanks for the suggestion. The repack might have to wait a trip as I don't know that I've got time before we've got to leave but we'll see how the week shapes up. Do you by chance have a guide or video I could look at to see how involved that is? Thanks again?

Order new bearing grease seals before you start.
You must remove the inner bearing grease seal before you can remove the inner bearing to clean and inspect it. When you remove the bearing seal it deforms. You cannot re-use it.

Good info to know before starting this project. Does anyone have a source and part number for this inner seal?

You can download the manual from Dexter Axle webpage. It has all the part numbers for the bearings, races, grease seals, brakes etc.
Also has the recommended grease.

Thanks for the suggestions. This will likely be a project for our next campsite, as I won't have time to learn how to do this and complete it prior to our move and no one in this area could get on site to do it in the next 4 days.

I use the 6-pt levelers (against Lippert's caution) to raise one sIde at a time. I put a couple of jackstands under the frame for safety. I wouldn't hesitate to use the easy-lube feature, but I've pulled and manually greased the bearings because I wanted to check the brakes (and I found one separated magnet wire).

I just did mine yesterday, all i did was use my levelers to take the weight off, and greased through the zerk fittings. ive never done it any other way unless i had a bearing go bad.

Of course now that i have a 3,000 round trip in 2 days AZ Travelers note about the grease pushing past the seal is gonna make me sweat on every steep downhill lol

Carefully following Dexter instructions and video and mine never leaked grease in 14 years.

The lawyers at Lippert will say don't jack it by the hydraulic levelers but science says it's fine. If you are paranoid, stick a jack stand under the approved jack point NEVER directly on the axle.
