Looking at Upgrading to Disc Brakes but...

Hope your New Year is off to a great start!

In doing research on upgrading to disc brakes one of the potential vendors sent me this info which I assume they found using my VIN:

Trailer has LCI suspension and Dexter axles not Morryde and the axle is 7,000 lb.
Suspension- 550061
Axle-651773

Anyone know anything about:
1. LCI suspension? And suspension # 550061 (Googled both and can't find info)
2. Axle 651773

Thanks in advance

My trailer is Keystone Montana 3120RL (2021)

I'm guessing the reference to "LCI Suspension" is merely what equalizer (center mount for both spring sets) you have as in Road Armor or Equa Flex for instance. It also states you have 7000# Dexter axles which are common as to most disk brake kits.
I went with the Hydrastar actuator, Kodiak brake kits, and nickle/copper brake lines when I installed my disk brakes about 5 years ago. Swapping the actual brake parts on the axle is easy peasy ... running the lines to make it all work is the most time consuming.

LCI is Lippert Components, Inc. All new Montana’s come with Lippert Suspension and pin box currently. Dexter axles are also standard. Montana switched from MorRyde a number of years back.

Same axles as mine, and I assume many others. I shot some pictures during my pdi, you may be able to use some of the other info on the axle tags. Help yourself. I have the part numbers for the bearing sets and seals if you need them.

Disc Brake Upgrade

Upgraded a 16,000 lb 5th wheel a couple of years ago. Best move ever! Used a kit from Performance Trailer Braking. Mike is very knowledgeable. They use the best power pack in the industry. As dieselguy said Swapping the actual brake parts on the axle is easy peasy ... running the lines to make it all work is the most time consuming. I did a Y at the front and ran down both sides.

Thanks everyone!

I'm handy/mechanical and a DIYer but I never liked the idea of working on brakes on any vehicles as I don't have experience and well, brakes

I'd tackle it if I had someone to guide me so I wait for the time maybe later this year when I can have it done.

I am tempted but I'd only do it if I had a step-by-step guide and knew exactly what parts (and which are the best) to buy. Is such info available for my trailer?

Thanks again!

All disk brake conversion kits are pretty generic to any brand be it Montana, Cedar Creek, Jayco ... so don't get hung up on guidance for your specific unit. The brake parts themselves that replace your electric brakes are an easy swap on your Dexter axles with nothing special involved for Montana specific. Deciding on just what path to run your lines and where to mount the actuator is where differences in install come into play. Most mount the actuator in the front storage compartment. Wiring the actuator is very simple as in 4 wires ... power, ground, breakaway switch, and controller. You do not need to purchase a breakaway battery as you already have that power source from your house batteries. The extra breakaway battery is for installs like standard horse trailers where there is no house battery. Here's an install I did several years ago on brand X. Other than 8 lug rotors, your unit would be no different.

PS ... Just my personal preference, but stay away from all rubber lined kits and go with hard lines as much as possible.

We had disc brakes put on our 2013 Monte and would not be without them. We had Performance Brakes put them on for us and they did an excellent job and did it right on site at the campground. You do have to get permission from most campgrounds for this but well worth the money and time.

Just some food for thought...

Cautionary note...if you do put disk brakes on yourself, BE SURE you DON'T have any of the flexible brake lines rubbing against any frame edges or anything that can--over time--rub through the line. I made that one mistake and didn't know it until it almost caused a major collision--which I was able to avoid--but trying to stop 15800lb 5th wheel on TV brakes alone can be a real "E" ticket ride to disaster! This error not withstanding, disk brakes are a MAJOR improvement in stopping power for these rigs and highly recommended

Good point to set forth. I always split a length of 3/8" fuel line and glued it to the I beam lip where all my installs flex lines were positioned taking into account for suspension travel.

I went with stopyourtrailer.com, they told me exactly what I needed for parts and the instructions were very easy to follow, did complete change out in 2 days. If you can replace brakes on a car, you can do this!!

We went to Elkhart, Indiana this past fall and had MORryde install Kodiak disk brakes and Independent Suspension on our 2014 Big Sky. Amazing ride and better stopping power. Having it done professionally is worth the cost IMHO.

We are up for maintenance this spring. I know from last years inspection that the brakes are ready for replacement. $1k for a proper brake job or $2.5k for the disk upgrade. For the difference I'm thinking disks. The install looks simple enough. I can do it on a single six pack and eight bad words.
