Looking Alabama Campground

We are looking for a CG along I65 Birmingham to Montgomery and / or along 231 in Alabama for our trip to Florida at the end of the month.

This will be an over night stay along the way, we just want to have a fairly quiet and clean park with working hook-ups, full. I will need to de-winterize on this stop.

Any experiences are appreciated. We stopped at Peach Queen in 2005 and this was a total dump and we do not want to make the same mistake this time.

I'm interested in the responses here also, Bob. As perhaps next year when wife gets retired and we get settled in the new S & B, we would be heading for Topsail Hill.

I believe this is just south of Montgomery, there is a Flying J. No, not suggesting you stay there.

However, cross the I way is a newer campground Montgomery South RV, exit 158. We have stayed there a couple of times. I don't remember a lot of particulars, but, we survived just fine. Pretty much an easy in and easy out, lot of pull throughs, full hookups the way I remember. AllStays app on the iPad says it is a PA park.

All that said, it is NOT along 231, so scratch it. Sorry. Seems to be 2 campgrounds at Troy tho.

Finding a campground is a challenge, but, getting thru Birmingham on I 65 thru the dead center of town is the real challenge. Be careful, HORRIBLE road, we were below 45 and the chucking was still akin to that on I 10 in years past. I think we will go around next time, if I can remember.

Bob,
We have been this route many times and unfortunantly there are not a lot of choices. We found this place which is on the 4 lane between I-65 and US 231, was nice, fairly quiet and we felt safe. http://www.woodsrvpark.com/index.html

North of B-ham we have stayed here: http://www.alabama.travel/places-to-...man_campground roads are narrow getting in and out.

I know what you mean about Peach Queen. We used to stay there when I was a little boy traveling to Florida with my parents. Was kind of a dump back in the 60's too!

Safe travels,

Phil

bw,

We stayed at this KOA for one night on the way back home this summer. It's not a dump but it is not the greatest we have stayed at. It is between Birmingham at Montgomery.

X2 on Dandy. It's handy and level. Must try the peach ice cream at the next exit south.

I can recommend Deer Run RV Park just north of Troy AL. Full hookups and clean. Have camped there twice with "Alabama Campers and Dancers".

Check out Gunter Hill COE campground near Montgomery. Long sites full hook ups. We will be staying there at the end of the month on our way to the Q.

I know this is a little late but, check alaparks.com for state parks. There are nice parks near B'ham and Huntsville.

As I recall, RRman, Troy is about the half way point from Elkhart or, Goshen. Stayed there in a motel overnight this last March coming back from Destin. I'll have to check into that Deer Run RV Park.
