Bedroom Slide Issues

So I changed the failed gear drive (see attached pics). My question is, how can I figure out what causes this? Watching the Youtube videos and comments from here say its not IF it will fail but WHEN. Indicating that it's a common problem and it is what it is. There's gotta be more to it than that. Not looking forward to keeping a $120 part for a spare.

At least they are not plastic/nylon(?) gears like I had on my SOB several years ago. Had a slide not working so had to manually bring it in to travel. Bought a new complete motor and also ordered replacement repair kit and installed in old motor for backup. Camping later and a friend needed my spare cause his quit so gave it to him and he rebuilt his old one and gave it to me. All worked out well. Pay it forward.

It’s hard to tell what happened to that gear from looking at the picture. We make a lot of gears in my shop. What type of medal is it? How much play is in the bearings? Did you stop trying to have it move after it stoped? Was the slide in a bind or some how hard to move?

I have never had a problem yet on my 2013 gear box and my 3800re has a huge bedroom slide. Lots of failures on the newer montana models suggest vendor change or cheaper parts now used. Trailers are money pits just like boats, etc.

I was just thinking the same thing. My 2012 3700RL has the same super slide (which had its own problems) and the original gear box is healthy and happy. And we use the RV a lot traveling around. It sure sounds like they found a cheaper price for the gear box and we got a crappier part.

We have a '16 SOB and our bedroom cable slide didn't go completely out but began making a loud clicking sound and causing the slide to jump sort of. Had it looked at by the Factory Techs at our National Rally several years ago, they didn't have a clue, but came back the next day with the Norco/BAL Reps. One sound and they all said "Gear Box". So while they were changing it I was talking to one about a problem I had heard about the gear boxes. Turns out customers were complaining that the mech was too slow and in their attempt to fix it their Chinese Suppler didn't quite understand and used lighter weight gears. Because of all the issues/warranty claims that started coming through they got back to their supplier and fixed the issue.
Moral of the story: There are a ton of gear boxes waiting to fail on units built during the 2015 to approx 2017 model years using the BAL Accu Slide mechanism.

Typical failure of the cheap powdered white metal crap that they sourcing for the cheapest price. I bought an extra entire unit (motor & gear drive) of the improved high torque to have on our 3790RD. I was going to have a local machine shop make me up 2 sets of gears but never got around to it. Figured the machine shop could make them for about the cost of a couple gear drives and once those were replaced that would be the last time needed. We just traded in our 3790RD but I kept the new higher torque in the box motor & gear drive. Paid almost $300 CAD for it, the new trailer has a different system but I'm sure someone will need one at a site someday.

I doubt a machine shop could make them for what you would be willing to pay. Every gear hast to have a different gear cutter at over a hundred dollars each. A different diameter or number of teeth need a different cutter. Then you get into clearances. If we bought several hundred that would bring the cost way down. I’m afraid we’re stuck unless you could find an off the shelf one and that is doubtful.
