[QUOTE=Crossthread;1108443]About 5 years ago I stopped at Colaw rvSalvage in Carthage , Mo.
thet had many rv in many conditions. Some were wrecked, rolled over,
They have a large storage area with used parts.
You might contact them and ask about the thicker tougher sheeting material that was previously used on the older rv’s.

Their contaci info is:
Colaw R V salvage
1-877-548-2125
Carthage, Mo.
I was impressed with the quanity of parts that they had.
I neither work for them, nor have any connections with them. Just passing along
Hopefully helpful info.

Thanks

Was the previous material Aluminum??

No.it is a hard neopreme type of material. A knife won't cut it. About 3/16th inch or more thick. It was installed in separate sheets, about 3 or 4 sheets on my trailer.
I have removed and reinstalled it several times.
If you contact them ask them to look up the bottom covering for my 2007 Montana 3000RK.trailer.

Angle iron

Have you considered using angle iron? I used this method on a previous 5th wheel I owned and it improved the looks and removed the sagging completely. I just went to a welding business and had them cut the angle iron to the desired length and used self-tapping screws...I worked great!

You might want to check out FRP or fibre reinforced plastic if you really want to replace the colorplast.

No offense guys but I don't want to replace plastic with plastic. If I don't replace it with Aluminum sheet metal then I may add square tubing bracing similar to the angle iron mentioned. Keep in mind I am a welder so fabrication isn't an issue.

Having experience with fabrication, I can quickly see that there is a much cleaner design with Aluminum sheeting. They don't do it that way at the factory because of cost and no other reason.

What kind of aluminum does not form condensation?

An earlier poster had concerns over condensation on metal under bellies and you stated that wouldn't be a problem with aluminum. I'm just curious if there is a difference between that and steel.

Yes. Aluminum doesn’t corrode like steel. Ever notice how Airstream trailers last forever?

FRP will not do well in a horizontal application unless it is glued to something else. It wants to be glued to a wall vertically (like in a 7-11 bathroom). It has no inherent "structure" to allow it to span horizontally. It would break or crack quickly at every attachment point. Coroplast is like cardboard made of plastic. The internal corrugated guts along with the skin on two sides gives it some structure to be able to span horizontally and hold up at the attachment points. Those aluminum honeycomb panels that jeffba linked to are very nice - but get your check book out and make sure your pen has plenty of ink!

It might. Aluminum in contact with iron and damp might really set up some galvanic action = corrosion

1 and 1/2'' by 1 and 1/2'' angle with self tapping screws in about 4 places should do it with coroplastic along with some treated 2x4's between the angle and coroplastic under the gray and black tanks. This way you take out some of the sag and reinforce your tanks at the same time.A couple of hours and you are done. If you don't like 1 and 1/2'' then use 2x2 angle.Been there and done that and don't have to do it again.

Thanks for the discussion and ideas

I guess I’m just a lot more comfortable with metal work than most folks based on my welding and oilfield background.

I was looking at this not so much from what material to use but rather from how to make tanks, plumbing and wiring more accessible. Plus what would give the cleanest appearance and be the most durable. 4x8 sheet Aluminum, thick enough to be rigid but not so thick as to add significant weight painted at least on exposed side with undercoating and braced with square tubing seemed like a logical choice for me.

Main reason to consider this is coach is not cooling well and I was considering removing corplast to install additional insulation of some type under the unit as well as modifying some of the plumbing. Just seemed logical to at least consider something superior to the saggy corplast......

I don't know how thick the aluminum is that you are planning to use. A lot of things kick up off the road. The corplast will give a little. Not sure the aluminum will. Is there any concern the aluminum might tear or rip?

I buy quite a bit of aluminum and stainless sheets for work at www.alro.com they do not have prices on their website, but offer different sizes, thickness and grades as well as finishes. Sheets can be ordered cut to size. They are in several states now, but sure there is a steel supplier or 2 in every state. They make a tread plate that holds up well. Owned a Bluebird Wanderlodge before and the entire roof was done in tread plate. 3003 tread plate resists corrosion. Got me thinking how nice that would be on the bottom of my Montana....

Well, after all that - is there a source for the 1x4 sheets?
