Some of the stupid stuff you see at CG.

It happened twice in 2 days. A person standing between truck & trailer while driver is backing to the trailer. Takes all kinds I guess.

If you ever have the opportunity to spend an afternoon during the summer at a boat launch site you will be well entertained. Some of what you see will amaze you and make you wonder how these people ever lived this long.

To each his own you know. If you attempt to say something to someone like that they'll rip your head off too!

Here's my sighting:

This last summer, we were at Brookville Lake State Recreation Area in Indiana. We were there for the week. The first weekend the campground was pretty filled up. On Monday morning, it had thinned out to almost zip. Across the next loop, in clear sight (no trees), someone decided to move to a different site across the road, in a different loop.

There was probably, maybe 6 adults (not young ones either) who were all giving assistance to the driver. They hitched up the trailer with slides and awning still extended, then pulled the trailer backwards, across the grass to the road, (why not forward on the road?) ... and then on the road, went backwards to the next loop, again on the next loop over and continued to backed the entire thing into a new site. Mind you, the whole time all the slides were still out and the awning was still out. It was one of the most bizarre things I've seen anyone do, except for maybe some of the knuckle head stunts pulled at dump stations!

The best bang for entertainment is watching the bafoonery at a boat ramp. At Havasu and specifically site 6, people will bring their lawn chairs, sit in the shade, and watch the entertainment. It really is that bad.

What I witnessed at an RV site this year was a husband backing his diesel pusher into a spot, with his wife banging on the side of the rig for him to stop.........and not just once No excuse not to use your cell phone, or a two-way radio like most people do.

The one I remember the best was at Bad Lands NP. A guy came in and spent all afternoon setting up his flags, lights, tire covers, carpets and who knows what else. He spent hours on this and got up the next morning and left without seeing the park. He probably rode through and thought he had seen the park.
Oh well.

Boat ramps are definitely my favorite. So long as I could find a shade tree, I'd be one of those sitting beneath the shade in a lawn chair! LOL

Reference to CGs - When we had a TT, I always took my load leveling sway bars off before backing into our spot. Especially if I new the spot was going to be unlevel in either direction. I've watch two different groups come into our current CG with TTs that did not do this. Sounded like shots being fired due to their equipment taking so much abuse. Is this the way folks with bumper pulls normally park?

I suspect quite often.

My dear departed BIL would be the first to tell you that he absolutely could NOT back his travel trailer. But it never bothered him, made him mad or upset.

He always looked at it as entertaining the campground or his neighbors when he came home.

He lived just on the edge of a small town and the neighbors would all watch for them to return to watch the two of them try to get the trailer into the parking spot beside his garage. He said it was just like Saturday morning cartoons only on Sunday afternoons.

Now thinking of how much I really miss him.

Was at Fort Knox military CG this summer. We watched three ladies work for close to an hour trying to back the small travel trailer into a site. Funnest part was that it was a pull through camp site. Nope I didn’t say.a word or offer any advice.

Backing a rig

My FIL constantly brags to other campers about owning motorhomes for over 50 years! Yet to this day, he doesn't know how to maneuver using side mirrors! Absolutely can't do it, and assumes everyone else needs help backing their rigs!

Spent an extended time at FT Gordon just outside Augusta GA this winter and towards the end of our stay I was approached by another camper who had been on site a few weeks. His stay was up and he asked if I would mind towing his 5th wheel to his new location about an hour and a half away. Noticing that his dually was onsite just a few days earlier I asked if he had truck issues or…? He told me he couldn’t afford the fuel and SOLD his truck?? I had only spoken with the gent once, noticed that his rig wasn’t in the best condition, and we had some medical issues that we were dealing with, I told him I couldn’t assist. Next day he comes knocking at the door and asks if he could borrow my hitch! He found another truck that “should be able to handle the rig”. Needless to say the answer again was no.

I was there for 2 weeks also. They must have come in at a different time!

We were at Cheney Lake west of Wichita last year camping right next to the water on the west side. We had gone out in our boat and decided to come back in for a while ... as we were about to anchor near the shore, I saw a whole family of our Latin American neighbors sitting in our lawn chairs, kids playing in the ashes in our fire ring, and another standing at our picnic table heating up our Weber Q grill. I walked up and asked what the H+++ was going on here and that this site has been reserved, this is our camper, and this area is not a day use option for just anyone to use. Of course no one spoke any English (supposedly) ... they just muttered something to one another and calmly walked to their pickup and drove off. A lengthy discussion with me and a park ranger shortly followed, but nothing was done. Geeze Louise!

Its the folks that bring all their backyard gadgets for a weekend that continue to amuse me. Often it includes the neighbors too. A regular where we had our seasonal would reserve one of the big center sites and would literally fill the site with tents, awnings, chairs, games and one or two of those huge barb-ques. They never used any of the other CG facilities, participated in activities or even mixed with the seasonals. Best of all these folks were reasonably quiet and gone Sunday by noon.

Boat ramps are always fun. I watched my "Dad-I-know-what-I'm-doing" son launch our boat with the transom drain plug out. We got the boat out before it fully sank but the day at the lake was ruined since the electrics were soaked. The ramp lizards got a laugh that day and son got a lesson about overconfidence (arrogance?).

It's always interesting to waste an hour watching the Haulover Inlet channel on youtube.

We just bought a boat and I was so ready to sell it on day one after my nightmare at the ramp. Problem was getting it back on the trailer. Would be nice if the dealership had some training for boat owners. I do wear my hip waders now with the water getting colder.

My favorite past time at a camp site is watching people back their rig into a site. Other then entertaining, you learn a thing or two. I had the pleasure of watching a 45' toy hauler back into a site I'd have problem with. It took 4 guys to direct him and an hour to get it done....
