Arguing with DW

The DW wanted a flag mounted on the RV. I thought a suitable location would be the flat top portion of steel housing the king pin at the hitch. Drilled 3 - 1/8 inch holes and mounted the flag there. Looks good - but DW says I have compromised the integrity of the whole hitch and fears that torque there will cause cracks through the holes across the steel and we will have a catastrophic failure. I say, there is no torque across the top of the 1/4 steel plate - it should all be dtributed through the Mor-Ryde hitch. Its always something - darned if you do - darned if you don't. What do you think about the hitch now needing to be repaired?

It's unusual at Rallies to not see some flags mounted that way, and I've never heard of a single issue.

Have someone plug weld the holes in flag Mount to the hitch top.

Three 1/8" holes are insignificant compared to the holes for the breakaway switch, the pop rivets holding the serial number tag, and the gigando holes for the various height adjustment settings. You are fine!

That is where I got the idea originally - I didnt think of any problem like cracks developing! Thanks!

I m not an engineer but I was an Ironworker for 40 yrs. Round holes are less likely to creat a crack and when filled with a screw there should not be any structural loss.

We've had a flag mount screwed on the pin box on our last 3 Montana's via four 10-32 screws. Never a second thought to mounting it that way as you'll see numerous fivers at about any campground with a similar mount on the pin box or the pin shoe. Like Carl mentioned there are way more other holes already on any pin box. I would propose ... let gals worry about gal stuff and let guys worry about guy stuff, but sorrow comes in all shapes and forms now days.

Flag mount on pin box

I was going to mount a flag on the pin box. Got my drill and the flag mount ready to do the job - then I read the sticker on the pin box (pic below) and decided to make one of those PVC flag poles that spin with the wind on the ground. If my unit was out of warranty I might have done the install.

Typical CYA OEM sticker. This is for some unknowing person who wants to cut say an 8" hole in the top of the pin box to set a flower pot in. Look what holds your break away switch on … a screw put in after the pin box was installed on your fiver. Read about people cutting off a small triangle at the rear of the pin box frame in order to clear their bedrails. Just like jacking up a trailer by the axle … it's fine right under the spring pads ... it spells death to an axle jacking right in the middle of it by someone who just doesn't know better.

I agree with your proposal - sometimes you gotta go along to get along, you know. We have collectively convinced her that all will be well and Ole Glory will
not cause disaster!

Thanks to all!

Don’t those levels mount on the hitch with holes and screws?

You got that right! If ANYTHING happens to the rig from now on - it will be the fault of the flag mount on the hitch! Oh well - the flag looks beautiful!

Technically, if you get carbon steel too hot when drilling and then cool it down too fast by quenching with oil or water, you can cause a martensitic condition in the immediate area of your drilled holes, a brittle condition from which cracks can start.

Lippert likely tempers and draws down the steel part after it is drilled, punched, formed, and welded to mitigate any brittleness that may have happened during those operations of its manufacture.

In practical terms though, unless you got the holes smoking hot, and/or burned up some drill bits, and then poured oil or water on the holes you should be good to go. If the drilling went easy and you let them cool down on their own, no problems. Don't forget to deburr the holes.

Probably the biggest worry is when the drill bit is breaking through the hole, snagging, and sucking it down through and poking a hole in the rubber part of the pin box.

*40 years of machining, a bunch of them on rockets, missiles, and military aircraft.
