How did the pre-op go, Glenn? Mine are generally lab work-ups, a quick physical to determine that you are fit to undergo surgery and pre-registration. Is this out-patient?

That's pretty much what this appointment turned out to be. X-rays, EKG, weight, blood pressure, blood work and a ton of questions.

I have another appointment next the 12th for more of the same.

On the 16th, they will install a stint from the left kidney to the bladder. At the same time they will explore the bladder and remove the tumor. They will also take a close look at the stones in the bladder to see how they will be handled. The 3/4" kidney stone will be taken care of using a laser.

The biggest question I had was, "Will I be able to get back on the road by September?" The answer was, "Barring any unforeseen circumstances absolutely". Goshen here I come.

Sounds good so far Glenn.
When they use the laser on the kidney stone, do they take it out or will you have to pass it naturally? I had one a few months ago which caused me to have a whole new respect for women having babies.

Glen, I've had the stint before, had to keep it for 3 months. My stint was due to a 6cm stone and a diabetic flare up at the same time, had to treat the diabetese before the stone. I was having stones and gout at the rate of 1 to 2 episodes a month. The uroglist put me on polycitra(acid nuturalizer) and told me if I stayed the course I'd never have another stone. Glen, that was 4 yrs ago and to date NO gout NOR stones(I am a happy camper). Be the way I was so relieved for that stupid stint to come out while on another note I was so relieved to have had the stint in the 1st place. The stint did not hurt, you just allways knew it was there. Prayers are with ya...Steve and Nancy

Sounds like things are progressing OK. What hospital are you dealing with?

About 40 years ago I had just such a stone. A year before that my sister also had a stone. When we talked about the pain her comment was, "When I had Bill I thought labor pain was about the worse pain you could experience. That thought changed 100% when I had my kidney stone."

As far as "do they take it out or will you have to pass it naturally?" That they don't even know until they get in there. They are think that if they can break it up enough they just might let me pass it. If you'll recall from an earlier post that ain't no stone it's a bolder at 3/4" in diameter. It'll take a stick of dynamite to blow that sucker up.

Steve and Nancy, I am a type 2 diabetic so I doubt that will cause any problems.

Glen, At the time, my type2 had gone to an a1c of 10.5, so they would not remove the stone. They stuck the stint in gave the me the polycitra to drink and 3 months later out came the stint and the stone/stones had"disolved". I have not had another stone since/amen. My stones were not calcium and would only show up via ct scan. The polycitra keeps the minerals from binding in the kydney therefore no more stones. I love eating way to much, so after a brief trip to a a1c of 6.2 I'm now back to 8.25. I've got to start watching that, bread, pasta, and BBQ. Again wishing you the best.

Steve

Yup, I have also heard from a female coworker that she'd take childbirth ANY DAY over passing a stone. As she described it, when having a baby the body is designed to experience some stretching while passing a bowling ball, but the kidneys tubes are NOT designed to stretch at all, so that's why she thinks the pain is more.

I'll take her word for it since I have had 3 kidney stones in my short life and now know that the pain is worse than childbirth, not that I care to experience the comparison. But they were nowhere near 3/4" in diameter. That is a kidney boulder, not a kidney stone. I would not want to pass that out via conventional means. Since mine were so small, my doctor told me to tough it out and I did.

But that tumor is whole other story. Good luck to you, Glenn. Keep up the spirits. Thanks for the progress reports to keep us from wondering.

We wish you the best and a speedy recovery. Be nice to the nurses and remember to drink that water to flush out the bits and pieces.

WOW, Glenn - a 3/4 inch stone? Unbelievable!! I kinda know what you mean about the pain. I have had 5 of those suckers. Stone #3 got stuck on the way out and they had to go "fishing". Didn't feel a thing as I was out like a light!!

Good luck and God bless you.

Glenn,

All of these people telling you their horror stories is giving me pain! Must be some masochists in this group.

We wish you a very successful and painless procedure, regardless of which method is used.
