Tips for stagecoach travelers
I saw this while standing in a men's room in a restaurant in Columbia Falls, MT, then managed to find it on the internet. It's from an 1877 issue of the Omaha Herald.
Tips for Stagecoach Travelers
Omaha Herald, 1877
Here are some tips that really might come in handy
The best seat inside a stage is the one next to the driver. Even if you have a tendency to seasickness when riding backwards — you’ll get over it and will get less jolts and jostling. Don’t let "sly elph" trade you his mid-seat.
In cold weather, don’t ride with tight-fitting shoes, or gloves. When the driver asks you to get off and walk, do so without grumbling, he won’t request it unless absolutely necessary. If the team runs away — sit still and take your chances. If you jump, nine out of ten times you will get hurt.
In very cold weather, abstain entirely from liquor when on the road, because you will freeze twice as quickly when under its influence.
Don’t growl at the food received at the station — stage companies generally provide the best they can get.
Don’t keep the stage waiting. Don’t smoke a strong pipe inside the coach. Spit on the leeward side. If you have anything to drink in a bottle, pass it around. Procure your stimulants before starting, as "ranch" (stage depot) whisky is not "nectar."
Don’t lean or lop over neighbors when sleeping. Take small change to pay expenses. Never shoot on the road, as the noise might frighten the horses. Don’t discuss politics or religion.
Don’t point out where murders have been committed, especially if there are women passengers.
Don’t lag at the wash basin. Don’t grease your hair, because travel is dusty. Don’t imagine for a moment that you are going on a picnic. Expect annoyances, discomfort, and some hardships.

Steve,
That is really good. Isn't it amazing the only one that has really stood the test of time is "Don’t discuss politics or religion". We were just discussing this last night at our family gathering. (We have both sides in our family.)
Happy trails...................

Steve, what restaurant was this? That is where my daughter lives. We just loved it there. Did you stay in a park there? We stayed at the Columbia Falls RV Park and it was wonderful. Everything was right there. The camp hosts kept an evil eye on everything. When our waterline broke they were right there to turn the water off. Great people. Made great friends with them. We will be staying there next year also.

Sue, we also have both in our family so have learned to avoid those discussions! The others just need some enlightening!
Kathi, it is The Back Room, on the south side of US 2. I think it's close to your RV Park, but, then, everyting in Columbia Falls is close!
Yes, we're at a park "here", although "here" is about 5 miles east of where you stayed. We're at Mountain Meadow RV Park and absolutely love it and very highly recommend it to anyone who likes a 'state park setting'. Lots of big trees on every site, decent spacing, etc. Here's a picture of our site and another of the view from our site. We're on the end of the row. You can't tell from the picture but our patio area, picnic table, fire ring, etc., are among the trees to the left in the picture.

I love the mountains. We are sitting here in Elkhart, IN having some work down on our coach. Hope to be hitting the trail soon. However I am enjoying all the wonderful Amish food here.

Steve,
I could sure get used to sitting out there by the kingpin of your coach watching the sun set, heck watching the entire day pass by. What a view you have there.

Steve, we ate there. Wasn't that a neat place? Loved the food. Right around the corner is where we stayed. Did you eat at the little coffee shop right at the corner of Neculus and US-2. That place really had some GOOD food. Hope you are enjoying your travels. Kathi

Kath, The Back Room is the only place in Columbia Falls we've eaten at but we will check out the one at Nucleus and US 2. We go by there fairly frequently, although I've discovered a "back way" and shorter route to Walmart so now don't go by that intersection as frequently. We've eaten at restaurants in Coram and in Hungry Horse but our favorite two places require a trip the whole 50 miles across Going To The Sun Road. One is Park Cafe in St. Mary and the other is Two Sisters near Babb.
Dave, the sun sets right over those mountains, with beautiful colors through the gap in the mountains. Vicki got a picture of one of them. We're hoping to see the Northern Lights one of these evening before we pull out of here on Sunday.
