Starry Night??
Really dark last night in Munising, MI BUT the guy across from me left his yellow porch light ON all night. Any suggestions--I hope he either leaves or notices the light switch is in the wrong position. Of course he has the camp site next to the lake!
I checked the Aurora Borealis forecast and tonight is a 4 and maybe visible on the horizon--planning to drive into the National Lakeshore to find a dark spot. Also no moon tonight.

Update: No red roof! We drove out to a National Lakeshore site (secret) that was about 12 miles from Munising. It overlooked Lake Superior to the North--really DARK and wonderful for star watching. And a few other hardy campers were also there. Everyone seemed to understand that white light is a NO NO. Red lights were used. Great star viewing-but no Aurora Borealis as we had hoped or maybe we gave up to soon. May return with warmer weather coming.

For the photo guys, I used my Nikon D7000 set at ISO 6400, bulb so I could control how long the shutter is open, and my 18-70 lens all on my sturdy heavy tripod. I held the shutter open from 30 t0 45 seconds and got great results. With no wind, my most interesting shots had the black outline of the trees with the stars in the background. Also got a great show of the Little Dipper.

Since I usually have a telescope with me, when set up I invite others to view as well. I would mention to your neighbor that you were stargazing and invite them out to view with you, then use that as a lead to talking about lights, you could also mention the International Dark Sky Association as well.
We were in Mackinaw July of 2014 when they did the "lights out across the UP", they even turned off the lights on the Mackinaw bridge (except the towers' clearance lights), that is DARK up there.

Timandsusan what exactly is the lens do you have? What is the F number? I have a Tamron 17 to 70 F 2.8 for my small lens for my N 7000.

My lens is a Nikon 18-70 mm f 3.5-4.5. I just experimented on the exposure time. With no wind, the 30 to 45 second exposure worked for me especially with the trees that were not moving. I did not get star trails but was not trying too. I am pleased with the results and will try more night shots.

Does the amber door light get too bright for star gazing? I leave mine on to let accompanying friends and family know we prefer privacy and not visit until it's off so it is on during most overnights. I could see a white light being too bright but so are the bright campground courtesy/security lights.
I need to treat boondocking in the dark differently.
