Water Heater Drain Plug

Does anyone know what size socket or wrench to use on the plug to drain the hot water heater?
We are looking for our first freeze Thursday so I need to either keep mine plugged in or winterize it.
This will be my first season for winter.
I will use the compressed air method with antifreeze in the traps etc. so that I can quickly use it when I need to camp.

dannyl, it takes a 1 1/16" socket.

On Edit - You will have to use a socket with an extension, as there isn't enough room to turn a wrench.

If you don't have one, the best place to go is a pawn shop - kinda' like a treasure hunt in the pile of sockets !

Those big sockets are outrageously priced. For years I've been using a big wide pipe wrench on the rod, then turning it with an adjustable wrench...works fine.

Hope you don't "slip" with that big adjustable pipe wrench. Could make the socket look inexpensive. I like Mine.

Some of us just look for an excuse to buy another tool.

I like mine too, the right tool for the job, maybe I was a mechanic for too many years.

I can't see a pipe wrench loosening that plug. I drained mine this afternoon and my Craftsman 1/2" drive wrench, 2" extension and 1 1/16" socket is the preferred method so as not to damage any parts adjacent to the plug.

I have three sets of tools in the RV, 1/2" drive, 3/8" drive and 1/4" drive and they're worth the cost to use the right tool for the right job. Spend the few bucks now for a tool you'll use later or spend big bucks repairing the heater. I've found a truism concerning RVs - if it has the word "RV" on it it costs twice as much.

Right On Noneck,

I got rid of My boat 2 1/2 years ago. Made RVing look real inexpensive.

I always said the motor home was something to throw money into when the boat was fixed

If the part or tool says "boat, RV or airplane" you know it will be over priced.
