Passport America

Has anyone here had experience with this program. It sounds like a good alternative to an expensive campground membership.

We signed up this year, thanks to Glenn's recommendation. I will say there are some restrictions but we paid for our membership easily in one year. I wish there were more campgrounds in CO that were Passport members but even with the few we have it paid for itself. I know we're going to "re-up" next year.

I guess $49.00 is worth trying it out....you can make that back just staying at a couple of them.

I would strongly suggest joining Passport America. Passport America member parks will give a 50% discount on their nightly rates. Each park has it's own conditions/restrictions as to when and for how long the discount applies. These conditions can be found on either the Passport America website or in the Book you will get as a member. The cost to join is $44 per year but you can make that up the first week you are out camping. The second campground we stayed at after joining charged $40 per night, we stayed 4 nights at $20 per night. You do the math. Last spring we spent 6 nights at Elite Resorts near Ocala, Florida. The parks rate was $32.00 a night, we paid $16.00 dollars a night. That was a savings of $96.00.
If you do decide to join please reference the following number as it will get me a discount off of next years dues. # CW335639

I would say that a lot more campgrounds should look into joining in on discount camping like Passport or Happy Camper. I always see campgrounds with a lot of emptey camping sites. I ask the owners why they do not join and they tell me its to much of a bother. I try to remind them that a site filled at say $16.00 is more money to them than the site not filled at all. If you are a member of Passport or Happy Camper and you stay at a campground that is not a member try to sell the owner on to checking into the programs.

I took Glen's advice and joined. Have saved quite a bit during my first year.
Just watch out. Some of the campgrounds are not what they advertise. Found this out in Virginia. But found another PPA campground not too far away.

If you plan to use PPA, you should plan to keep up with the additions and DELETIONS of participating parks. Twice we have pulled into a park listed in the PPA book and learned that it is no longer a participating member. Each quarter a magazine is provided that provides the updates, but we haven't updated our book. We drove several miles off I-84, in route to Yellowstone a coupe weeks ago and found a park in Eastern Oregon was no longer a member. Bummer!

We also have Passport America. Use it all the time traveling. We belong to Thousand Trails and Outdoor world membership campgrounds. Normally, we go to Florida and have no problem staying at their parks. Outdoor World is around Orlando and is full. Were on the waiting list for a couple of weeks in Jan. we may have to go to Passport this year for a short spell. its well worth the price.

I would also agree with the earlier posts. We use it mostly while traveling as most the rates are based on staying for only one or two nights.

I have found a few that actually allowed the PPA discount for up to a week one even gave us the discount for 2 weeks and we could have probably stayed for a month but this was during the off season and the place was basically empty.

Our experience has been that we could only stay one or two nights, not on weekends, and/or when we pulled into the park they said they no longer were associated with Passport America. I wonder why? Hmmmm? We belong to the Elks Club and they have parking available at most of their lodges across the country. Some have electric and water, with dump station. Some have only parking available in their parking lot. In any case, it's only a matter of a donation which they use for children's charities.

We are just about to wind up an extended trip (7 months) from Florida to Alaska and back. I went back and totaled up our stays in PA campgrounds, and found it was 30 nights. I figure we saved about $400 in total. Not bad for a $44 membership fee.
It's true that their book is not 100% accurate, because they are adding and losing parks all the time. We have found their website to be current, and we always call in advance to be sure they have space.

We've used PA for years and recoup the cost in two or three nights of CG's. Last week we had a full hookup site at Amana Colonies RV Park for 12.50 and tax. Others were paying 25 and tax. PA owns nothing. They just provide the park with a directory listing in return for the discounts for members. Like Good Sam but 50% discounts. Most parks restrict the number of nights at that discount or designate certain weekends that don't get the discount. But it's saved us a lot of money over the years.

They mail out quarterly updates (in their RV America magazine) but even then there will occasionally be changes I'm not aware of. But that's happened only a couple of times.

We are using PPA C.G's for our "follow the sun" Trip to Az in a couple of months (2400miles) where possible. Just checked out Indian City Thunderbird C.G..in Adadarko,OK for 9.25 per night...anyone been there??? We have been to Indian City in Anadarko but do not remember the campground.

I have had passport America for last 3 yrs. At the time I joined it was $109.00 for 3 yrs and being a Family motor coach member at the time I got another 6 months free! so 42 months for $109.00 and that was paid for on my first 3 campgrounds, Its a must have for anyone traveling and camping.

richfaa, You mentioned in your Oct 6, 2006 post in this thread that you would be using your PPA CG's on your "Follow the Sun" trip that you are on now. Could you elaborate on how that is/has worked for you and Helen? I am considering a membership but it seems very restrictive as to number of nights and availability....

Thanks

Phil P.
