Purchased first 5th wheel, '08 Montana 3000RK, in August and immeadiately took 4200 mile 7 week trip (which included excellent Goshen Fall Rally). TV was '06 Dodge 2500, stock except for Timbrens. It had 10,000 miles. Got 12.5 mph for entire trip, probably 20% unloaded miles. Worthless computer showed 14.4 mph.
Weighed the rig on way back
Dodge full fuel and hitch, otherwise empty
front axle 4320#
drive axle 2860#
3000RK loaded for vacation but empty tanks
front axle 4160#
drive axle 5440#
trailer axles 8700#
Therefore 2420# pin weight, total trailer 11,120# Right??
Yes, I see the pin weight took weight off the front axle. Will take that up with the dealer that installed it but the pin does look directly over the axle.
Terrific trip, no trouble with anything! Couldn't have done it without the excellent info from this forun.

My big sky added 60 lbs to the front axle and this 07 Montana decreased the weight by 120 lbs. So the type of pin hitch and placement on the trailer may also make a difference. This is with the same truck and hitch.

It sounds like you had a great trip. Glad everything worked out for you.
The added weight certainly sounds within reason. As long as it does not put you way over the axle rating I wouldn't worry about it.

Glad to read about your trip, especially as my rig (both the monty and tv) are identical to yours. Great news. I think that your mileage will increase as the miles on the truck pile up.

Your numbers look correct.
The hitch should have come with directions as to where it should be located...mine is 2" in front of the rear axle...just far enough forward to put a little weight on the front axle.

I agree. Your numbers look correct, by my calculations. That seems to be a lot of weight coming off the frontend. The pincenter should be anywhere from dead center over the axle to two inches forward of that point. On my prior truck, 20 lbs were pulled off the front axle so it was close enough.
