Enjoy. Be sure to do the lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore, the game loop at Custer and the Wind Cave NP south of the town of Custer.

The NEEDLES HIGHWAY is a must do but a little challenging with a DRW

When my wife and I were there a tour bus had got stuck in one of the tunnels, or sow I thought. You would see the diesel smoke fly and it would move a foot or so The driver kept at it until he eased through. He had did this numerous times without a scratch on his bus. It was so close you couldn’t see daylight around his bus except a little on the sides.

The Prevost tour buses go through there numerous time a day. A DRW fits. Is there a lot of room? No. But it is not that tough and you will feel like you accomplished something afterward.

Enjoy your trip to South Dakota. You'll have no problem driving through the tunnels if you decide to travel Needles Highway. We decided not to go through the tunnels with our dually. They say dually's can make it, barely, but I didn't want any scratches on the side of my truck, We got to the first tunnel and then turn around. You'll have no problems. The drive is fabulous and the overlooks of Mt Rushmore are beyond awesome!

Just a note: When we drove through Custer State Park, we had several interruptions with donkey's walking in the road. And buffalo do roam free. So beware of the wildlife!

Also, if you are driving past Mitchel, SD, it is well worth a couple hour stop to visit The Corn Palace. Click here

as you drive the loop in Custer SP, don't miss the Lookout Tower.
Fantastic views.

Also, another must see is Crazy Horse.

Enjoy your travels! Custer State Park was one of our favorites. It’s beautiful and full of history. We also found so much to do in nearby Rapid City with the Bear County drive through, Black Hills Maze (the kids loved this!), reptile world, etc. We made great memories there and I hope your family does too.

The Custer area of South Dakota is one of our favorite spots. We took our DRW through the tunnel on Needles Hwy multiple times with no problem. Check out the Cathedral Spires hike from the highway, the scenery there is out of this world.
Enjoy!

Second that. Also,be sure to take a bag of carrots for the donkeys in Custer. Bear Country in Rapid City is fun, too.

Be sure to check out Deadwood on your trip. Lots of history, and great Bloody Marys at a local bar! I can't wait for the opportunity to go back again! Enjoy!

Van Tour

We were there last Year, we went 20 years prior, still neat to see.

I would recommend a Van Tour if you can still book one?

The gal that drove us grew up there knew a lot we would never have found out.

Drive through the tunnels, and park, look back through, can see Mt. Rushmore, the way they were Cut.

Save you truck, and avoid the Stress, take the day off let someone else Drive.

Enjoy

We were there last year & stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch just south of Hill City. It's a very fun area to vist, since we rented side by sides in Hill City for day & that's definitely the way to go thru the needles highway. I DON'T recommend trying to drive thru that area with a dually.
Custer is fun little city to explore There's also a dinosaur dig site you can vist not far from Custer but can't remember the name of it. If your going thru Rapid city to get there be prepared for your truck to get a workout.
Enjoy your time there, we sure did!

We went to Custer SP a few years ago, got lost. DW did not like going through the Needles, it was hailing on one side and the sun shining on the other side. We leave 3 June for Yellowstone and may bring the granddaughter back for few days there. I’ll probably stay at Heartland RV park if we stop by there

What a great place. You can also make a day trip to Devils Tower, and a day trip to the Bad Lands. You could take a couple weeks just exploring the entire area. Safe Travels!!
