Hello from the North Country
I am sure many of you have seen these types of questions about trailer weight and towing capability of the truck. Well I have a 2004 Siverado 2500HD diesel and am looking to buy the new 295RL Montana fifth wheel. Beautiful Rig. But looking at my truck specs I can tow 20,000lbs GCWR - trailer and truck weight. The trailer weighs on the brochure 11,780 lbs and my truck is 5,858lbs so it looks like I am in the limits. The pin weight is 2,300lbs and my GAWR is 6,084lbs. IT would appear I can tow this legally - insurance compliant. Has anyone out there dealt with this issue with the same type of vehicle and trailer. Just making sure I am not missing something. Thanks

Welcome to the forum. What do the sticker say on your door for your payload, you will run out of payload way before towing, most 3/4 ton pickup have anywhere from 1,900lbs to 2,300lbs, gas might run a little more but other will chime in, the rule of thumb is 20% of the gvwr which is 2,860lbs. If you can swing it I will go for either gas 3/4 ton or a 1 ton diesel.

Just from personal experience with Dodge's, you're most likely going to have enough weight on the rear axle to cause problems with bulges in the tire or bead cracking etc. The problem is that you won't know for sure until you load the truck and trailer and have it weighed. The amount of stuff we carry is what causes the problem more often than what it says on the stickers.

Welcome aboard! And kudos for even asking the question. I think you’re going to find you don’t have enough truck for that trailer. Loaded pin weight on that 5er will be around 3000lbs. Add hitch, people, and other misc. gear and you will need a truck payload rating of at least 3500 lbs to have a safe margin. The sticker inside your driver’s door should tell you how much additional weight your truck is rated for…”passengers and cargo not to exceed xxxx lbs”, or something to that affect.
You will likely be around 1000+ Lbs over your trucks legal limit.

Welcome to the MOC, great question. That year will not have enough capacity for that 5th, pin weight will be over 3K once you start loading your 5th. That truck is a dry capacity not with passages, full fuel , 300lb hitch and misc items. Just for example our 3160RL said 2300 and change lol reality is 4780 yeah 4780lbs loaded. Is that 11,780 dry, if that a dry your going to be way more once loaded.

Don’t worry about being “insurance compliant”. If you have insurance your insurance can’t deny coverage. Think about this if you drive drunk, speed, run a stop sign or red light or are over weight you are covered. If your insurance company could deny coverage for any thing they would always find a way to deny coverage. If in doubt go to your agent and have them contact your company. I did after the issue was brought up here.

You are using the wrong weight. The wt you are using is what it is at the factory door. No battery, propane tanks, and all your stuff.
For planning purposes always use the GVWR which is 14,300 lbs I think. That makes a pin wt of abot 3,200 lbs. For the truck, you need to get the payload wt off the yellow sticker on the drivers door jamb. The brochures do NOT have this. The payload is the pin wt (3,200) plus probably 700 to 900 lbs of humans, maps, tools, and STUFF. That puts you in dually territory or a very carefully spec'd SRW but in both cases a 1 ton. I am close to Parksville, come visit me and I will show you my wheel by wheel weight for an MS3811 on a F450. It is still overloaded by 200 lbs. Send me a private message if interested.

Only way to know for sure is hook it up & weigh it. My 04 with a HC 331 hooked up was 500 over gross but axles were fine.

It's not the fanciest hitch, but the Demco Recon fifth wheel hitch weighs in about 60-70 pounds or less. It comes apart in 3 sections for easy removal, or the whole thing can be lifted out in one piece if you don't mind man-handling it. You don't have to get a 300 pound hitch. Air bags, shocks on the hitch are all nice, but I've had absolutely no issues using my Recon hitch. It's standard, basic, and easy to use. It's just a suggestion as a way to reduce weight.

Your 2004 Silverado is 9200 GVW. My 2007 3500 Silverado is 9900 and I am OVER about 400# pulling my 3000RK which has I believe is 14240.

Thanks for answering my question above. I think I will have to look for a 3500 truck.

I had a 2004 Silverado diesel. I had a similar trailer - 33.5 ft Montana. I was 400 lb over truck weight. Axles fine. I also read from people that worked at Chevy dealers, the 2500 vs the 3500 was one extra leaf spring. I didn't notice any braking or power problems.
Just whatever you want to do. I made a mistake when I upgraded to a 2012. I thought the 3500 would cost a lot more - wrong. It was around $1500 at that time. And the GVCR was something like 1500 lb more. Check all these numbers out do what youwant.
