We just drove from the west coast of Washington to an island off the coast of Maine and back. We had reservations on the way to Maine because I had made tee times at Whistling Straits and other golf courses. On the way back, we decided to wing it. I tried to decide the night before, or sometime during the morning as we were driving. We never had a problem finding a campsite. We never just showed up without contacting them first, but both of our daughters did as they were working their way across the country. One daughter decided to wing it in both directions, and the other decided to just wing it on the way back like we did. We all took different routes in both directions, and we all found great places to stay.

Thanks
MOC is a book with new chapters added every day.
My buddy Dan could write a book. Having been an outfitter for most of his life he has many stories not just about hunting and fishing but Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and families and camping trips. And where in Wyoming to go to see the game and fish and everything the tourists never get to see. He is probably why Wyoming is my favorite place to vacation.

Any trouble finding overnight camping while travelling?

Thanks to everyone who contributed to answering my original question. I was looking for up-to-date experience and got it, plus a lot more options I didn't even know about. You guys are great!

One more question though. We've never tried to stay overnight at a WalMart or Cracker Barrel parking lot or at a Love's or similar truck stop. What's the etiquette for the store lots or truck stops--ask the manager, or just park? Also, what about slide-outs? I can't operate in my trailer without putting at least the kitchen slide out. Can't see this working in a narrow Cracker Barrel space. Is it a problem opening your slides in a truck stop parking lot?

Thanks!

We are on a 6 week dog show trek thru Arizona Nevada Ca & Idaho. Been just parking for 3 or 4 nites on Bureau of Land Management property. It works out real well. Once a week we’ll stay at a regular rv park to clean out the black tank. Once you get it dialed in I personally like it better than rv parks.
Plus it’s FREE!!

I try to ask. If I haft to put a slide out I park where it’s on the edge of the lot where it won’t take up extra space and nobody can run into it. I’m sure you will but don’t leave anything but foot prints.

This may be a naive question, but how do you readily know what BLM land is available to you between your weekend stops at commercial campgrounds? I looked up the BLM website and got information overload in a hurry. So is there a short cut to see what BLM land is adjacent or close to your route?

I have a GPS program that shows BLM, national forest and all other government land. You can probably find a GPS unit that does.
