Hydralic fluid

Any body know what kind of fluid they used in slide pump on 05 Montana. Called lippert they said contact keystone. You would think the mfg would know what fluid was in it.

We used ATM fluid, specifically Dextron

Like mentioned ... Auto Tranny Fluid. Go to Wally World and get the house brand ... it will work fine.

It's not tranny fluid it's hydralic fluid it's clear

Must have been changed by someone or they found clear Tranny fluid. ATF has always been what's recommended.

Not if it didn't have atf from the factory. We're talking 05 not 10-15 I mean I can tell the difference between hydralic fluid and tranny fluid and I'm the original owner.

It does call for ATF but keystone did use A ATF which is clear. It is hard to find. Hope this helps

We are not talking high quality hydraulics in these trailers...atf or hydraulic fluids will work. If you want good hydraulic fluid, go to a catepillar dealer and buy it there. John

Finally got a reply from keystone they said put hydralic fluid in it but they didn't know what grade fluid. Been a mechanic my whole life and never seen clear tyrant fluid. If it exists I would like to see it.

This is copied and pasted from Lippert's Lipsheet 0291-notice, they reference ATF or hydraulic fluid as recommended for use, as long as it meets their specs:

Do not use ATF-TYPE F fluid as it will not allow the seals to work properly.

I even talked to lippert today and the referred me to keystone because they said they didn't know what fluid keystone used. I asked you are the mfg shouldn't you specify what fluid goes in your pump.

All petroleum type fluids that are commonly used in some type of hydraulic application start out as 10 wt petroleum based oil. Then they add a “none foaming” agent and this 10 wt oil becomes jack oil and is clear to slightly yellow in color. The by adding and additional combination of ingredients to help lubricate and help handle a little higher temperature it becomes Hydraulic oil. Now we add some ingredients to make it work better with the material used on clutches and it becomes ATF.

Then we go back to the basic 10 wt petroleum oil and add a reddish die to it and it becomes MIL5606 aircraft brake and hydraulic fluid use in non turbine powered aircraft.

In use to purchase MIL5606 aircraft hydraulic fluid from Texaco, they would deliver it in drums and add the die while I waited for them to unload it then give me the proper paperwork to make it lega for use in aircraft.

I can go on until this list gets really large but the bottom line is if you want clear hydraulic fluid got to Tractor Supply and pickup some hydraulic fluid for use in the older tractors during the summer it will be 10 wt and will serve you well.

I worked for Lippert about the time your unit was built. The fluid that Keystone used was the same viscosity as ATF. You can use Dexron or Mercon ATF. Mix it with what is in the reservoir. You won't hurt anything. And, you are correct ATF is red in color. It is only a dye. It will also make it easier to see the fluid and the level inside that semi transparent reservoir. Just remember, add the ATF to the reservoir when the rooms are all retracted or, in. As long as you have no leaks, all should be just fine.

I know your concern about this, but many of us have been thru it years ago ... no matter what color of fluid you have in your reservoir, do as many have tried to state and just use house brand auto tranny fluid. My new 05 2980RL came with the clear fluid ... I added tranny fluid when needed at the recommendation of Lippert and MIMF back then and never looked back. Many of us have been thru this and went with tranny fluid (don't use Type F). As stated, our hydraulic systems are the basic of basic until the level up came along. What you want is a low viscosity fluid that doesn't foam much ... whether it's green, red, or clear. ATF will not hurt any of your seals or o-rings.
