Hwy 101 Oregon Coast

Hi All! Quick question for the community. I plan on traveling down the oregon coast hwy 101 from Astoria area down to Orick/Klamath region. Stopping around Newport for a few days in between the trip. I have a 40 ft 5th wheel trailer and want to see if anyone has had any experience traveling down this hwy. Is the road overall big rig friendly. Any problems filling up down the coast? Thoughts/insight would be greatly appreciated.

I have been towing my 40' Montana up and down the Oregon Coast for over 15 years. The road is fine for your RV. Yes, there are curves and slow portions, but not a problem.

There aren't many (any?) truck stops along the way but fuel is plentiful. I try to to fill up without the RV attached. As you can drive the whole coast on one tank of fuel, filling up without the RV should be a non-issue.

Good choice on going south. Take advantage of all the scenic turnouts handily located on the coast side (your right) along the way. Easy to get in and out of them in the south bound direction.

Good to hear Carl, we'll be heading up 101 from Santa Rosa to Astoria and looking forward to the time spent near the water.

If planning on camping along the way, a lot of parks right on the coast are probably full already.

@Carl n Susan thanks for the info. I am glad you mentioned being able turn into some of those pull outs. It will make the drive more pleasant. I am excited to seeing the oregon coast!

As a native Oregonian I can tell you that it's a beautiful drive. Yes, RV friendly...just take it slowly through some of the twists and turns and the many coastal towns. But plenty of room. And there are many, MANY RV parks. The state parks are nice but fill up quickly. Also, they are not always big rig friendly so check out site details before booking. But many private parks with room for big rigs.

I've never stayed there but that's a beautiful stretch of beach. Here's hoping for nice weather...

We've driven hwy 101 from Port Townsend Wa to Eureka CA several times over several years. Even stored our rig in Port Orford a few times for trips back east. I've been able to pull into nearly any gas station for fuel; after-all, bigger trucks bring in gas or diesel. Best to go without your rig. And you cannot pump your own gas. Plan plenty of time for your journey. The road can be rough, construction zones, and traffic. So don't expect to go much more than 55 mph very often! We've seen hundreds of big 5th wheels, many even towing toys. Check out Harvest Host, there are places to stay. We love one near Tillamook. If you're an Elk member there's a several nice parks too. The scenery is so awesome along the coast. Harris Beach State park has a few big rig friendly sites if not all booked.

Be careful in Eureka, almost got robbed at a gas station there 10 yrs ago, probably worse now days.

I have driver that route going from fort Bragg to Astoria. I have a Chevy 3500 long bed and my Montana is 39 feet long. I would have been in trouble in a couple of spots if the had been someone coming the other way and if it’s a semi, you could be in trouble. I won’t be doing that drive again.
It was beautiful but stressful.

Check for road closures. A part of 101 slipped between Port Orford and Gold Beach.

I have been up and down the Oregon Coast with my 40' too. I plan to go this summer once again! I agree with everything mention in Carl n Susan's response.

If you are an Elk, the Elk Lodges in Florence and Brookings have plenty of room to park.

In Florence, Fred Meyers has cheap fuel, but you may need to unhook.
