Driving to texas 2moro my(local)people,would U take 99 or 5 to bakersfield??

Hwy-99 is currently the lesser of 2 evils. Most of it has been resurfaced. The last time I was on I-5 (1.5 years ago), the surface was good but the bridge/overpass transitions were holey. If you can straddle the white line when crossing them it is better. But traffic usually doesn't allow that.

Pick your poison. They both have have their issues. If taking 58 out of Bakersfield to go east, more of the same for a while.

Highway 5 is a straighter road than 99. and 99 goes through more towns than 5 does. I was on 5 not that long ago and was surprised at how good the road was. Lots of trucks travel 99 Next time I head south i would avoid 99
