Always closed except while dumping.

After dumping the tank I close the valve. While pressing the flush peddle to fill the toilet I slowly add the scoop of Happycampers to dissolve the powder, fully depress the peddle, fill the toilet again with water and flush again. Good to go and never a smell issue for years of using this product.

I'm having a similar problem. While boon docking, when I go to empty the gray tanks, we get a bad smell throughout the camper (not sure if it is coming from the black or gray) and was thinking it might be those mechanical valve spoken of previously under the sinks, thoughts?

Take a sniff under both sinks before and after your dumps. Our kitchen sink vent went bad last winter in our 2014 SOB 5th wheel. WOW, what a smell. Changed both, not very expensive. Solved that issue. Pic of under kitchen sink vent.

I suggest going online and looking at a product called TankTechsRx.com It was recommended to me by a friend that works for RvCountry in Eugene Oregon. Getting ready to go full time and from everything I read and his recommendation this sounds like one of the best products on the market. I will soon find out.

While on the roof I was looking to pop the top off the vent, in the past they were pressure fitted, this appears to maybe have a screw holding it on under some silicon, does that sound right?

.....mud wasp nest had the vent completely blocked. Only noticed it because the vent cover was leaning, found the nest when I removed it to repair.
