Ford Factory Brake Controller

I just bought a new to me 2012 F-350 with the factory controller and was curious what gain setting other owners are using with their Montanas.

Ours is at 8.5, but don't know what variables may effect where you should have yours. I check the setting before leaving our paved driveway by making certain I can slow everything down & stop from rolling forward with the paddles. The brakes aren't supposed to lock up on pavement.)

I used 5.5 to 6.5 depending on conditions. Then one day I got in after a seasonal stay at a campground and had to go up to 8.5 to 9. I suspected something was up. A brake inspection showed one magnet dead.

I love it so far. This is the first vehicle I've had that has a built in brake control. I've used it as it came from the lot and had no idea it could be adjusted.. (duh) I'll have to read the manual.

Only one trip so far and started at 6.5 but moved up to 7.5 after a few stops. Will continue to fine tune but I like to put it up to the point where I feel a slight pull from the trailer and then back it off .5.

Trailer weight is just under 15,000 pounds, keep mine set at 8 most of the time.

Thanks for the information. I think I will start at 6.0 and adjust from there.

It does depend a lot on brake condition/adjustment. I had mine at 9.5 but noticed the brakes were not working as well this year as last. Adjusted brakes and had to drop it go 8.0.

what is nice about these is that they are like a progressive type of controller. On a light brake pedal it only reacts like you are braking, you will not get a jolt. I keep mine on 8 and seems to do well. Due to the progressive braking

Camper is 3900FB, weight is 14400 when ready to camp, setting is 8.5. The progressive that 'racerjoe' mentioned is call 'proportional', I think....

My gravel test put ours at 6.5. I do the test at least monthly. I can't imagine being higher than that setting. I keep everything well serviced. 30k miles under the 3750. It was set higher with my old truck using P3 unit.

I keep mine set on 8 most of the time. It seems to work well. I am sure weight depends on how the setting works best.

I also have mine on 8.0

It's a trial an error thing.

You don't want the truck completely slowing down the trailer without any assistance from the trailer. And you don't want the trailer to lock-up way too early.

Find an empty patch of road. Start with the setting on 7.0, get up to 35mph apply the brakes, do you feel the trailer pushing or pulling? If it's pushing increase the setting, if it's pulling decrease. This is not scientific, it's more seat of the pants. If you don't feel like you're stopping like you should, increase the setting. You'll figure it out.

I started with mine at 7.5, but had to drop it to 6.5 before it threw me and the DW through the windshield. 6.5 seems about right for a solid stop for me. Each will differ depending on the braking action of the Monty.
