Always fun reading things that Carol responds to. My wife and I love the words and descriptions. Sounds like us at home together.

Rich, now that you found the screws and it's a 5 minute job, does that put it back in Helen's job description ?

Dave, When we are hooked up to a sewer in the campground, we leave the galley and tub gray tank valves open. We make a point to not intentionally put any food scraps down the kitchen sink - of course some gets in there doing dishes. Before we get ready to dump the black water, we close both gray's to collect enough water to rinse them out and to flush the drain after dumping the black tank.

Most folks don't think much about the grey tanks but think about what goes down there,,Food scraps, etc Soap and scum buildup and we tend to leave the gray tank valves open so that stuff can build up and ..stink as in rotting food. The grey tanks need almost as much attention as the black tanks. We do as Vanman and let those grey tanks fill and flush them out from time to time. Van Man.. Everything on the roof is in Helen's job discription..today was the first time I have been up there..it is scary.

Question for those of you with either of these "vent thingies" installed. During gusty winds when these things may rotate, is there any noise transmitted into the coach?

Steve,
I've never heard it make any noise, but I haven't been in any real gusty winds either. Stayed last night in TonTow, there was absolutely no smell at any time.

Red3171, that thingy looks so similar, my bet would be that they work the same, but the cost seems to high. I am real pleased with the one I purchased at CW.

I keep those grey tanks closed until ready to dump. At first, I had them open and I too noticed some smell, but as long as the tanks are closed up and there is water in the traps, I can't smell anything.

This 360 vent is probably the best add-on investment I've made, if something changes on the grey water, I'll buy another one for that vent.

Steve: No noise whatsoever. You put them on and forget them. I cut the stem off on the ones I installed as I was afraid they would be too high. I cut about 2" off the stem. Didn't change the performance of the vent.

Thanks for the replies. I think we need to get some of these when we're near CW at the rally.

As for the odors, for the past several months we've had occasional odors from our galley gray tank. Even when the dump valve is closed and there is water in the trap. We had a leak in that tank and as of about a month ago it has a brand spanking new gray tank. Guess what. Still have the odor. Now I'm convinced the trap is the problem and needs to be changed out. If you are scratching your head about the odor it might be worth replacing the trap just to find out. Ours is likely coated with grease and whatever else goes down the kitchen sink. Trap cleaners help for a short while but not for long term on ours.

Steve,

I assume you are just talking about the U shaped piece below the drain in the sink? ...or is there something else called a trap?

Yes, that's it, Robbie. I'm not sure if it's a standard home size or if you have to get it from an RV place. You could take it off and go check Home Depot to match it up.

That's the only thing I can figure to be holding the odor. Brand new tank. Valve closed. Can't be sewer gas from the park's septic system.

Steve,
Looking at my trap under the kitchen sink, I think it is a standard size. If the trap does hold water, then how does the smell get out? So many questions for inquiring minds..... :-))

BTW, just read your postcard website, very nice! Maybe someday when I finally get out of this stick hosue (10/01/06) I'll be able to put some of my computer skills to work, but trying to equal your site will be a real challenge, nice work!

Thanks for the nice comments.

Darned if I know how it gets out. When on the road I figured it jiggled out enough to let the gas through. But not when we're parked, like now. Maybe there's an interaction between the water and whatever is lining the trap. In other words, I have no idea how it's getting out. But it does. And it's coming from the sink drains. I've even added water just in case somehow the water got free of the trap but no change. And it doesn't do it all the time.

Steve, gotta say, we have not had this happen, the sink giving off bad smells. First thought that comes to my mind (dangerous territory here), have you ever done the Calgon/water softener down the drains when you travel?? I know, that is supposedly for those non-functioning level indicators, but I have been using, just so we have cleaner tanks. Hmmmm, baffling.

Carol, we've done that. We've also done the drain cleaner thing like you get for home drains. If we were going to be in this one longer I'd go ahead and replace the traps. But not for two weeks or less. I will let the dealer know when they take this one that they might want to swap out the traps in the galley.

I'm not a plumber, but I know there isn't enough space between the sink hole and the trap to make a smell, and I know that the smell can't get through water....or at least I don't think it can. And guessing that you are pretty clean people and wouldn't let anything go dormant under your sink....you might be someone who could make an advertisement for the 360 if it works! :-)

I'll definately buy another one for my grey water!

Inquiring minds need to know!

Robbie, I agree with your assessment. I don't know how it is coming from the drain, but it is. I have to wonder if the vent is plugged and pressure is causing a bubble to rise through the water. I doubt it but....

The galley sink is in an island peninsula in our model. We have food stored underneath. Normally the lazy susan is under there but we removed that. So we are in the under-sink area enough we'd know if there were something dead in there. Or dead food.

I'm at a loss on this and didn't mean to hijack this thread for my own problem. But I guess I did. Sorry.

Have you tried bleach? I put some in our tank ever so often just for the hxxx of it. We haven't had any problems and we leave the galley opened when parked and the gray opened when doing laundry.

Steve: Have they still got the vent pipe under the cabinet that goes nowhere but under the cabinet? Take a peak. The smell might be from there.
