SRW vs Large 5ths'

For those of you wanting to pull a large 5th with a SRW truck I offer these thoughts.

My neighbor pulled into the campground a few days ago. He is from Kansas and has to come over Monarch Pass to get here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_Pass He has a F250 Ford, with 20x8" wheels, 275/65/20 tires. 3750lbs capacity @ 80psi. That gives him 7500lbs of tire capacity. The rear axle GAWR is 6100lbs.

The rim in the picture was on the right rear, thus, getting into the truck you normally are not on that side of the truck. We found this after he arrived and was cleaning the truck up from the trip. It was not flat, still holding air.

My question is the 6100lb axle rating because it is a F250, or because the rims are designed to be run @ 65psi per the tire chart on the truck.

So those of you that want to run SRW trucks, add air bags, extra springs, good luck. Me, you can look at my sig picture.

I don't this happened but there are tens of thousands that haven't had any problem including me.

The sticker on my truck says 65 front and 80 on the rear.

Well over 50,000 miles of towing ours over mountains and deserts on both ends of the country and never had anything like that happen.

With these big heavy newer Monty's why screw the pooch and get the right tool for the job ,Me and my wife would love to just have a SRW short bed they are alot easier to get around town but it is what it is and that is why we go Dually 1 ton for us being full timers,if I was just a part time Vacationer it would be different

When I bought my new 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500hd SRW I was considering the 3500hd SRW Chevy or GMC. The only difference in the two trucks was the 3500hd had an extra spring, otherwise everything was the same drivetrain and engine wise. There was a bid difference in the options you could get though as the 3500 could not be equipped with everything I wanted in 2015. I did not and would not consider the DRW as I use the truck for other things, it also would not have fit in my garage where the truck is parked each night & day when not being used.
In 2016 GM made all the same options available in the 3500hd, if it had been available last year I would have the 3500HD only for the sticker... Yes I put air bags in the truck, it rides better empty and when I have a load on it, tows the Monty great. Personally I am more concerned about some pulling the large trailers with older DRW trucks as they were not designed to as heavy duty as todays, had much less torque, horsepower and braking capacities without some of the new advantages of hill assist, exhaust braking etc.... the stickers on the door are just that. Safety is the number one priority and driving to conditions and load with years of experience hauling trailers driving truck are far more important in my mind than a sticker that gives you a little more loading capacity but no more towing capacity........

As far as tow vehicles go, do the math, make your decision, live with it, and lets put this topic to sleep for once and for all.

Speedster I agree. Safety is what is important. If you look at the J2708 tow standards what you find is the DRW trucks are held to a lower standard. No wonder they are rated higher. The new 2017 Super Duty Ford is rated to tow 32,500 pounds. Does anyone seriously think you can tow the equivalent of 2 Montana campers fully loaded SAFELY with a pickup.

Dually for me. If I had a swr, with my tire size, I would only have a weight capacity of 6,172lbs. at 80psi on the rear axle. My dually has a capacity of 11,332lbs at 80psi. Rear axle weight of truck with trailer attached is 7,804lbs and that is with the trailer not loaded right up to go on a holiday. Pin weight was 3,500lbs which will increase slightly as we load personal items, food, air compressor etc. in the trailer.

Nope not going to buy it. That rim was either deficitive or most likely he hit something. That something I bet was curbs as the right rear tire is the one that in most cases hits the curb on a right turn. As said before there are millions of
Ford F250s out there and this is not been reported as a problem. Yes I know most are not pulling big heave rigs but look arround at all the ones that are overloaded with cargo. Dirt, cement blocks, bags of concret whatever. Nope something else,is going on here. JMHO

When anything is operated at or near it's limits for long enough failure is a high possibility. I have had an F250 and F350 SRW, and now have a DRW F350, and towed the 2007 3400RL with both the F350s (SRW & DRW) and I couldn't believe the difference between the two. IMHO the DRW is much more stable in the corners, braking and overall handling. Now with the heavy Big Sky I wouldn't be without a DRW.

Tire should have went before wheel. We are under rear and front axle ratings,but over gvwr by 350 lbs...

My tires have a capacity of 3750 pounds each.

First, I appreciate all the replies. I have seen the wheel, you have not.

There is no impact damage to either the wheel or tire. This is a example of a wheel operated at it's max capacity. A SRW truck with air bags and a heavy 5th.

The truck is a '05 and had been overloaded for most of it's life. So a casting failed. It presently has a bit over 150K miles.

I have a light 5th, with a heavy pin weight, and a DRW truck is my choice. You guys that want to live with your head in the dark, so be it.

There are many folks on this board with Montana's riding on SRW with no problems for thousands of miles of travel. And the folks who you insult on this board with "our heads in the dark" do not apprecciate your attitude.

I agree with Bob about your comment. This is the very thing we try hard to avoid on this site. Open Roads forum maybe, not here.
