Broken Spring Hanger

Came across this while doing yearly maintenance.

Passenger side rear axle hanger. Having it welded back as is, does not seem like it will resolve the issue.

I am wondering if others that have had broken spring mounts can share what they did or changed to resolve the issue. I see posts on the addition of a “v” to strengthen. Some add material to create a box around the spring bolt. There is the Morryde X factor. Independent suspension is really not an option here in California. What has worked on our Montana’s?

New hangers are available, and when having them replaced, boxing in the one side could be done at the same time. Make sure you measure the existing one so you get the same size.

As Bob wrote, box one end and add a gusset back to the frame from the boxed end.

Same happened to our Montana HC. We decided to take our rig to a spring and alignment shop when we found the spring assembly bent as well. Just suggesting an alignment on the suspension once everything is repaired.

The usual reason a spring hanger bracket gets broken is backing at severe angles..this puts a whale of a load stress on the brackets..

Brackets are one piece U shaped so the entire bracket has to be replaced if cracked where it is welded on..

Many of the new RVs are now coming with this Lippert support welded onto the frame and spring hanger bracket as shown in 5his short PDF I lit together a while back.

It is standard now on grand design units

Diagram of the brace support being used with a link to the part as well in the PDF

Spring hangars do break.
I had them blocked as mentioned and also did install the morryde x factor.
You can install at all three points, the center/forward/ and aft hangars.
Its easy to do but can interfere with blocking the hangars if not careful.

I have a 2007 Montana and been pretty solid since
although I did break a spring in Alaska last year....

Note:
I also use East County alignment in Santee for trailer axel alignments.
That should be close to you.
They do a excellent job on Morryde suspensions that do not accept easytrack alignment kits.
Actually originally recommended to me by Morryde.

Cheers

A costly option but many of us have had the horse and buggy suspension removed and replaced with the more right independent suspension. No more worrying about wet bolts /Springs /hangers /shackles. In addition to that have the disc brakes installed, then all of your brake problems will be over. No more grease all over the brake shoes/ no more magnet failures/ no more brake wiring problems. Those two options are worth their weight in gold.

Thankyou both for the recommendations. I am very familiar with Santee and will look into it.

I am not an accomplished welder, (I can stick two pieces of metal together ) but that just looks like a poor weld job to begin with. Did you have all the others carefully checked and/or braced and rewelded also?

Unfortunately, you had this issue. The good thing is that you are inspecting your rig and you found it before any major damage occurred. Speaking from experience, I lost an axle on a loaded flatbed trailer due to a broken spring weld. That was a real treat and a lesson learn the hard way about inspecting the underneath of your trailer before hitting the road!

Great fix too. I am going to look at mine and see how my hangers are fixed to the frame!

Cheers

I have an appointment in about a week to have it looked at. The current plan is to have the broken Hanger completely replaced. I also plan to have the front and back hangers closed and a gussets added.

I agree with your comment on the welds. We bought a 5th wheel partially for the turning radius and we feel we are gentle on our equipment. We need to be able to back into an RV site and not worry that each time the frame will break.

The trailer place I chose is very close to where we are and has an interesting system that I am looking at called TRU TRAC. This system attaches additional sway arms to the axles to reduce side to side force on the springs and hangers.

Thank you for the recommendation. Is the company near El Cajon? I live up north and would be interested to see how these work for your rig!

Cheers

Thanks Chuck. I'm planning on having that done to mine. We broke a hanger in Moab. Spent an extra week there waiting for a mobile welder.

Yes, the company is in El Cajon. I have not had any work done yet. Let me reserve my comments until after I see how it goes.

I am sharing the results of the suspension work we had done to repair our broken spring hanger and hopefully prevent any more broken hangers.

The spring hanger was replaced and the Lippert “V” reenforcement brackets were welded to all the spring hangers. We had the alignment checked to make sure no other damage had occurred.

We had an addition suspension reinforcement product called TRU-TRAC installed on the axles. I believe this local shop has a patent for their product and manufactures it here in the San Diego area. The pictures show how it is attached to the spring hangers on one side and the axles on the other.

It is too soon to say much about how it works other than to say that my wife said she did not hear any of the normal moans and groans from the trailer suspension when we backed it into the driveway.

Straight line suspension in Mesa does trailer alignment.
