Sounds kind of high to me. We bought our 2015 305RL for 36k brand new in 2015.

Probably worth about $35,000 on the market right now!

Searching different RV dealerships across the USA web sites, your make and model is priced high. Drop that price about $10,000 and you are closer to reality.

Are you purchasing privately? If so, the seller is probably upside down on his loan and trying to get out of it. No dealership will buy that high. They have to add about $10,000 to their buying price to sell anything with a little profit. Also, most "private" sellers (you and me included) have emotional attachments to the thing we sell and value them higher than they actually are. If the "private" seller has additional items, like extra camping equipment, or additional batteries, or tires, or parts, a new television, new appliances, a roof that's just been completely resealed, or anything like that .... all of that does not add a single penny to the value of a used RV. It makes for a nice selling feature, but it adds no cost value. Dealerships will not give you a single penny more if the roof has just been resealed or not or a brand new television hung on the wall or not.

If purchasing from a dealership, negotiate that price down. Nothing to loose, everything to gain. If purchasing privately, see how far down you can negotiate, but be willing to walk. If purchasing privately, you have no warranties, guarantees, no nothing. If purchasing from a dealership, you might at least get a 30 day warranty, a better chance at financing, and a support system for repairs.

This year in our area was an anomaly. Demand is up and supply is down.
You can guess where the prices for clean used units are.

My sister and Bro-inlaw sold their 2014 Cougar 5th wheel for only a couple Thousand less than they paid for it 5 years ago. It sold the same week they listed it.

Jeffrey,

First - welcome to the forum! This is a great place to learn and share.

Benefits of buying via private sale include:
-Feedback on previous issues with the rig
-By meeting the owners you may get a better feel how the rig has been cared for
-In many states you do not pay sales tax on a private sale

We paid $40k for our 2018 305RL two years ago, so that price is high. I would like to think that mine is even worth $35K. I don’t know what a fair price would be.

There are a number of variables that need to be considered when deciding on value. In my neck of the woods (Western Rockies) good clean used 5'er's are in such high demand, that my dealer called me last summer and said he had a customer willing to pay more than what I paid for my 305 RL over 2 years ago. Many Montana dealers were low on new stock and any used units in decent shape sold same day, and that trend still continues. The above said, I agree with the other posters, a good clean used 2018, should be more in the mid to high 30's in pricing. However, if you live in an area like mine, and the unit is super clean, it could easily sell for $40K or more. Also, the late model 2018.5's (Front cap is tan in center and black on edges) cost a little more, than early 18's. Hopefully, the 305 RL you're considering has had all the factory bugs worked out? I had a crap ton of warranty issues, but now I'm finally able to enjoy it.

This is definitely a regional issue. The further you get from the manufacturer the more the units cost new. Transportation is expensive. On the west coast our unit was selling for around $50k new. We bought ours new in early 2019 for $45k. Here somewhere in the $40k neighborhood would still be a reasonable asking price for our 2018 in clean condition. In Illinois, $43 definitely sounds high. Likely closer to mid-30's.

I have a '19 305RL. It's a good unit especially for a first time buyer, but the price is a bit high. Does it have 2 A?C units? is it plumbed for washer/dryer? Does it have covers for the pop outs? Residential fridge? These things can raise the price.

Residential fridge is much much cheaper to buy and install for the manufacturers/builders. MUCH CHEAPER!

That's the reason it is a big push. Higher profit margin for the manufacturers. Its at least three times the price to buy and install an RV type fridge.

That’s a bit high. It should sell in mid $30’s. I would recommend you have it inspected as well. A good inspector can verify it’s condition, especially if you are a first time buyer. I bought my 2018 5er in April 2019 and paid $36k from a large dealer, included a 30 Day warranty, put new tires and fixed several small issues. Was put in service just over 1 year old when I bought it. Like others have said, we often think our stuff is worth more than it is. I walked away from 2 other exact same units that were higher. Both called me a month later agreeing to my offer. I had already bought my unit, in better condition, a year newer, for less price. Be prepared to walk away.

Ohio and Indiana is not one of these. Vehicles licensed for the road are taxable at time of purchase. If purchasing from a private individual, there has to be some kind of declaration or bill of sale or stated on the title when signing how much the transaction was. This is then taken to the BMV and when you transfer the title to the new owner (you), you pay the state sales tax. Yes, every time the "vehicle" is sold and re-sold, tax is paid again and again if you want the vehicle properly titled.

Other states may be different, but the OP lives in Ohio and is subject to paying tax, no matter where the previously owned RV originated from, provided the buyer is titling the vehicle in Ohio (or Indiana). If titling in a different state, they will follow the rules of that state. When TRANSFERING or moving to Indiana or Ohio, Indiana and Ohio do not collect a "sales" tax as it's already been settled in a previous state at time of original purchase.

I know, I've moved back and forth between Indiana and Ohio a couple times.

New York is the same, sales tax paid over and over again. Another thing for the seller to think about, is the sales tax break you get on the trade-in when buying another. Some time a few thousand dollars, which you would need to add to the price for a private sale.

That is applicable if you have something to trade in. In Missouri if you sell a unit yourself and buy another unit you only pay sales tax on the difference. Requires a little paperwork but worth the effort.

Good to hear! Sounds like you also got a reasonable price for a clean rig. We've enjoyed our 305RL. Hope you do as well.
