Joined the "Dropped it Club" today
Well I did it. Hitched up this morning, did the pull test, worked fine, then pulled out and KA-BANG down it went. Damaged the tailgate and the screw cover underneath the front cap. Tailgate works but looks bad. Will have it repaired or fixed along the road when we are somewhere long enough. I am sick.....I guess the locking handle wasn't locked when I pulled out. Oh Well, Life goes on and so does the adventure. (*(&^%$%^^&*@#$%^&* AND DURN On a brighter note, we got 12.9 mpg towing today, about 200 miles, of course, mostly flat. I hope everyone from the Fall Rally has a safe trip home or wherever you're going.....

Phil and Cathy,
Sorry to hear of the dreaded "drop"! But now you've gotten that out of the way. Glad it did not cause any more damage than it did.
Travel safely,
Dennis

It can happen to the best and most careful of us. Consider adding the Bed Saver to the list of "stuff" you have.It can happen again.

Phil and Cathy, I feel your pain! I don't feel it like you do, of course, but I am so sorry you had to join the club.
We have a bedsaver. But, that bedsaver won't save anything because it's STILL IN THE BOX, in that cargo trailer, waiting to be installed.
I dragged Wayne away from his football game and made him read your post. I think the bedsaver will be #1 on the "to do" list now!
So sorry about your misfortune.
Carolyn

Phil, sorry to hear about that, when you get a chance look at the Blue Ox Bed Saver. It will fit most hitches other than the Signature series Reese. I got one before the Big Sky came off the line and haven't dropped yet but I did a slow slide off test and it still makes a lot of noise but no damage... Dave P.S. we got home to Land O Lakes Wisconsin about 2 hours ago and just finished unpacking and are relaxing. We went up through Michigan and over the UP..

So very sorry to hear of this. I hate that sick feeling that comes when something like this happens. Better things are ahead.

Not sure Blue Ox makes a bed saver for the Trailer Saver Hitch, but I will check. I had one on my last hitch, lot of good that does now.

What I do is do the pull test before I remove my Roto-Choks and before I raise the landing legs more than one inch off the ground. Don't know if this might of helped you or not.
I'd be interested to know also if they make a bed saver for the TrailerSaver hich.

Phil,
It is saddening to hear that happening to anyone. I had always wondered when and if it would ever happen to me. Well, I don't have to worry about it anymore, but I did scrape the side of the MH on the first time out. "Stuff" just happens.
You are safe and that is the most important thing. Every thing other than life is material. I really wonder why the tug test did not work indicate a problem? Hmmm!
God bless.

Sorry to hear about the dreaded drop. Same thing happened at the campground we were at on the Labor Day weekend. The guy was being very careful and then, boom. You were lucky it was just the tail gate, it could have been worse.

Sorry Phil, when we had the Trailer Saver I checked on the Bed Saver and it wasn't available that was in 2006 so they may have one now. Good Luck. GBY

Phil
That is everybody's fear of dropping the rig, I told my DW (LaVonne) about your happening and her remark was, I think I'm going to throw up! Now that is really bad, right? Hope you get it fixed, without too much expense.

And we were just talking about you. On the way home from Anchorage, a truck in the oncoming lane had a license plate that was "XAV8TR". Just a smidgin different than your screen name. Sorry about the dropped Monty. Glad that the damage wasn't worse!

Phil, I've had a partial closing of the hitch when I've gotten the pin too far to the side of the opening or higher than it should be. I listen for the clack that indicates the lock has seated, though, and I always make sure the handle is locked, too. If I don't hear that clack, I pull free and make sure I'm properly lined up before I try again.
I hope there isn't a design flaw with the hitch, but I realize where that suggests the design flaw is. Finger pointing should always be done in front of a mirror, it keeps one humble.
Glad to hear it wasn't worse.
Bob

I'm really confused now. Phil indicated he did the "pull test" and the thing checked out OK then when he took off it fell. Why didn't it fall when he did the "pull test"? If it's going to check out OK then still fall what good is the test?
Just curious and a bit worried.
Dennis
