Another dumb stunt...

OK, I been pretty good, haven't done anything foolish in a while...

We're getting ready to go out for the weekend, and it's been a month since we were last out in the Monty...

So I figured I better drain and refill the Hot Water with fresh water... (no this is better than the forget the electric Hot Water Switch)

Imagine...

Gather up the socket wrench, got the right fitting for the Hot Water Drain...

Remove the outside cover for the Hot Water system...

Apply the socket wrench and start loosening the drain cap...

You know what I forgot?? (If you do, then this has probably happened to you too!!)

I forgot to relieve the water pressure for the water pump!!!

Do you know how much water will come shooting out of the hot water tank, before the pressure is relieved??

You might as well have tossed a 5 gallon bucket full at me...

All I could do was chuckle, and since this was at home, nobody saw me... but the wife got the better laugh, when I walked inside...

I did the same thing with my old Savoy fifth wheel. Only difference is my 24 year old son was standing next to me. Now he maintains a safe distance from me at all times. (Ha Ha)

Been ther done that. The water shot all the way across the street and nailed my neighbors freshly waxed car. Needless to say he wasn't too thrilled.

Me Too,

Done it. Looking back, I pat myself on the back for doing a great job of cleaning all that sediment out of the bottom of the tank. I know it was sediment because I was covered in it.

Happy Camping

Thanks for the tip. I don't need to experience this to learn from others.

That anode rod really shoots a long way if the pressure isn't relieved before hand. There's a pretty deep dent in the vehicle that was setting next to my Montana when some fool tried to drain the tank using this method the first time.

Done it skyguy, you just owned up to it before I did. Yeah it's a good thing our wives have us around to add sooooo much color to their lives!

In the future we should measure the distance the anode rod travels. The member with the longest distance gets a prize at the next international rally?

Yeah, and I had spent a lot of time trying other methods to clean out the tank! Now I know how, I just shouldn't stand in the way next time!

uh, glad to see there are others who have "been there, done that"

At least no one has owned up to doing it more than once (yet!). Notice how when we do it ourselves we seldom make the same mistake twice - usually something new the next trip ?? Nothing can replace good old experience (and hindsite) when it comes to learning as we go !!

You guys sound like your having lots of fun, but for this newbie, how do you release the pump pressure before you remove the anode rod?

Do you replace the annod rod each season? With the rod out how do flush out the sediment?

Thanks!

Well, I can only tell you how we do it. I usually pop the pressure relief valve near the top of the tank, above the drain/anode rod. You also can open faucets inside (hot ones). If you use the faucet method be sure you're not hooked up to city water or else it's turned off. I just flip the bypass lever inside the Montana so I don't have to disconnec our water supply since we live in ours all the time. Then I flip up the pressure relief valve and remove the anode rod. As for how often to check it, I check it about twice a year or whenver I think about it. My dealer told me the rod is fine until you start seeing the metal core. Usually I just find white mineral deposits and use a wire brush to remove them best I can and put the anode rod back in. I've yet to see the core on one. I replaced the last one with my new spare rod because the socket got stuck on the hex head of the drain plug and I beat on it a bit and bent the rod.

I open the low point hot water drain valve under the rig and then pop the pressure relief valve as Steve does. After most of the water is drained from the tank, then I pull the anode rod. Rod replacement frequency depends on the mineral content of the water. the original rod in our 6 1/2 year old rig still looks like new, but I drain the tank and leave the rod out after each trip until time to load up and go again.

Been there and done that! Steve suggestion about measuring the distance that rod travels remains me of some of the physics projects I used to give my kids! Love projects hate tests(they are just trivia contests)! Projects make you apply your knowledge. Let's see is that a linear relationship between water pressure and distance traveled?

Real newbie here! How do you releive the pressure before you drain the hotwater tank?
