Full Timing

The house is going on the market and we are liquidating to go full timing at pre-retirement age. We will be proceeding with establishing residency in SD shortly. For those already on the FT path was it easiest to have this handled by using a mail forwarding service to navigate the process? If so what service providers would you recommend? I know that the DL and residency require our physical presence but it is my understanding that a great deal of the process and paperwork can be handled by companies providing mail forwarding services. Lastly any input on SD counties that do not add a wheel tax to vehicle registrations?

We are SD residents. Using Dakota Post ( previously Alternative Resources), we established all residency requirements via the mail thru Dakota Post. The only thing requiring actual travel to SD was Driver License, and SD allows a reasonable amount of time to do that, a timeline I do not remember since we did it in 2003, but believe it was either 90 days or six months. Dakota Post out of Sioux Falls is great. We have purchased three trucks and 3 RVs and a boat/trailer using their support process without having to travel to SD. They have facilitated our absentee ballots, mail delivery has been superb, and the only requirement is a once every five years trip in person for driver license renewal.

Thanks Mike for the information. I have uncovered a fly in the ointment with our plans to use SD as our state of residency. Apparently there are extremely limited options (read none) for pre medicare aged persons for SD health care insurance that provide out of state coverage.

We use Americas Mailbox, which is in Pennington County, which does not have a wheel tax, but to us, this was not a deal breaker one way or the other. Fortunately, our health coverage is based in the state I retired in, below Medicare age at the start, but still allowed us national coverage with changing our address to SD. We traveled to SD, went in to the Americas Mailbox office on Monday, took care of paperwork for our mail service, as well as met with the lady that took care of our registration for the truck and trailer. We gave her the money for the registrations, and the next day, Tuesday, she had me go to the drivers license office to get my SD drivers license. She had me come back to the office as soon as I had my license so she could copy it and added that to the pack of paperwork the Americas Mailbox person took into Pennington County to take care of the registrations. This avoided several extra pages that would have had to be filled out for a non-resident. That afternoon, we had the plates and registration cards for both rigs. They also, every year, send an e-mail asking what vehicles we have and if we want them to process the renewal. I reply with the info, they then send me how much I need to send them with a Cashiers check made out to Pennington County, and they renew the tags when they get the check and place the renewed tags in our mailbox. This only costs $10 per vehicle. We have found the whole system of mail forwarding and the assistance with the vehicles to be well worth the cost, and we have the plan where they throw away all the junk mail which is also a big plus. Good luck with your new life.

Bob thanks for the information. AM is one of the service providers we were looking at as well. My original purpose was to see if I could get feedback regarding whether there were some providing a better service than others. My health care scenario is a bit different than yours as we most likely will not have any portability. I only found out today that the out of state or network offerings in SD are non-existent. We have some more homework to do but I think we are left with TX and FL if we cannot find a suitable health care plan as we are still a ways from being Medicare eligible.

Can anyone suggest what is the best state to have residency in (particularly related to taxes) if you are full time? We were thinking when we retire that we would snow bird in Florida and travel during the summer. Will be keeping the estate in Arkansas though.

Texas, South Dakota, and Florida have no state income state tax. I know Arkansas does, there could be some tax liability. You need to discuss this with a tax advisor.
