New Tow Vehicle

ALL,
I have enjoyed the many insightful posts in this forum over the last several years. I recently upgraded to a new 3121RL and after much internal debate I took her to a CAT Scale because I was worried that I was over my payload on my 2021 Chevy 2500HD. The payload on that truck was 3224 and my pin weight ended up being 3200 - oh boy!!! Before anyone comments that it will tow it - I know it will tow it since I brought it home from the dealership with it and it towed fine. After spending 33 years in the Submarine Force, the term "margin of safety" is deeply ingrained in my mind. I could not in good conscience tow this RV with my current truck, which sucked because I loved it. Anyway, after much research and searching I found the truck I really needed. Picked-up a 2019 Chevy 3500HD High Country DRW with only 5K on it and got a smoking deal for my trade-in . New payload on the DRW is 4524 and I feel much safer, which at the end of the day is all that counts. I probably could have gotten away with a 3500 SRW but who knows what the future holds and I did not want to be constrained if we ever wanted to get a larger unit. Thanks again for all the excellent posts and years of wisdom - you all have saved me time and time again!!

Congrats on the new Tow, we have a 2018 High Country Dually and have put approx 30K towing heavy and no issues.

May be looking at the '24 Silverado refresh, still looking at 500HP 1100 Lbs Torque, but would have to wait at least a year to work out the first year bugs.

I don't buy the first model year of anything. That's one thing I liked about the ram. The drivetrain is time tested.

Just so you know, you mentioned a “margin of safety”, well the engineers that determined the load capacity, also applied a generous “margin of safety”. You would have been fine with the “old truck “.

I’m going to call GM tomorrow and ask them exactly what my “margin of safety” would be on my over weight truck.

First it was just add airbags, maybe a leaf spring, don’t carry any water, don’t go very far and now we can add GM/Ford/Ram “margin of safety”?????

I learn something new everyday.

That's funny. I have heard the recommendation to carry a full tank of water to reduce the pin weight since the fresh tank is at the rear of the trailer behind the axles. Not really sure how much difference that would make though.

Weights are one aspect but traveling in winds the DRW is much better for traveling.
DRW has it's challenges but even DW can handle it for errands.

Glad you learned something. The OP was concerned because his truck was 24 pounds over its rated capacity. Twenty four pounds. In the engineering world, whether it’s structural engineering, mechanical, or aerospace, a margin of safety is always applied when designing a truck or an airplane or a space vehicle for unknown contingencies. I could go on, but you’ve learned enough for today. The engineers on the forum understand.

Our tow vehicles are engineered to perform reliably up to various rated capacities. Beyond those capacities are no guarantees. The space shuttle Challenger was designed to launch down to a certain temperature (capacity). It was decided to launch outside of prescribed parameters.

Garvinsd, at least in the past, the chevy's weight limit for the 2500 and 3500 was determined by the springs!!! Only difference per guys that worked for Chevy was one more leaf in the 3500. Brakes the same. Drive train the same. etc etc. My 2012 2500 pretty much doesn't squat at all when I am hooked up and I am probably 200 lb over. I don't worry about it.
