Electric Socket Problem

Woke up this morning to find the night light in my kitchen was out. Plugged into wall socket. Checking it out I could smell some electric burn. No smoke. Turn off the circuit breaker. Pulled the cover plate and loosened the socket to check it out. Could not see any damage to the socket, no burning on the insulation. The problem is that the socket would only come out so far, as it seems that the wiring is not long enough to get the socket out all the way.
Socket is on the back wall. It looks like it was wired before the back cap was put on. So the brain surgeon that wired it did not leave enough wire for the socket to be pulled out and replace if needed.
I will not be able to further check this out until later today or tomorrow, as I am on the road today to new location.
Now if the socket does need replacing, I can access the wire above and below, as there are cabinets there to gain access, would have to cut a hole. I would have to put in electrical boxes to splice a wire so there would be enough to replace the socket.
Anyone run into this problem before? Of having to replace a socket and the wire was too short to remove it for repair. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

If you can at least get enough access to cut the wires close to the terminals, you can splice additional wire with wire nuts to avoid adding an additional box. It may just be a loose connection to the outlet, but at this point needs to be replaced.

Well replaced the socket. PITA..... but after getting the old one out and looking at it, I think that it was just the night light that had a melt down. The socket looked fine, no charring, no melted wires, but I replaced it anyway. Thanks for the help.
