Refrig.
Another question relative to our order for a 3400RL. Kathy is interested in whether you have an 8 cu ft, 10 cu ft, or 12 cu ft refrig in your unit and if that is sufficient. I am thinking of saving the $2900 and staying with the standard 8 cu ft supplemented with either another small refrig in the area where the washer/dryer goes or some type of chest/upright freezer. Reactions?

One of the big issues in making our trade was the refrigerator. As a full timer, the double wide is very welcome. Us guys don't understand the stress in preparing meals in limited space and contracted storage. I you are a weekender, then the issues may be different. This is one for your wife to decide. "When momma is happy the whole family is happy." At least, that is how I see it.

Helen would kill for the double wide. It is a must have for full timing or long timing. We nearly bought a entire new unit just for the double wide fridge. We do have a chest freezer that we had to give up a recliner chair to fit in..There is never enough room in the dinky small fridge..

Ditto - the MAIN reason for upgrading to the Big Sky is the refrigerator, followed by the carpet and pad and then other things.

Alan and Kathy, We have the standard RM2862 by Dometic, I think it may be the 10 footer. My DW makes a lot of soups and crock pot meals and was always short on storage, SO we bought a 4 cu ft Refer/Freezer that we keep in the front closet. We were able to get rid of our portable icemaker also. Works fine for us. Closet is still usable as pantry. She is not interested in a washer/dryer so this works fine for us. I think the smaller unit was $300.00. Quite a bit difference from $2900. You will be glad you got more storage capacity. BTW we fulltime also....

We are doing just fine with the standard frig. And we are full timing. I believe it is up to each family's life style.
Happy trails......................

When we ordered our 2003 Big Sky we got the optional 10 cubic foot refrigerator. I love it. It's amazing how much you can put into 2 cubic feet. The option was expensive though but have to admit it's been a good refrigerator.
The double refrigerator is tempting but I would want the pantry/cabinet space. So if we ever get another one we'd order just the 10 cubic foot, not the double wide one. I can't imagine having only 8 cubic feet though.

I've only ever had the 8-cf, so we seem to be used to it as vacationer, but it would be nice to have bigger. The 10-cf was about a 1,200 add when we ordered, and with the Dealers advice we decided money better spent elsewhere. Thinking back, the extra room would have been nice.
If they offered the double wide back then, I would have definatey gone with it.

Brad you're right it was about a 1200 dollar option. It seemed like a lot of money back then, heck still is, but we're glad now that we have it, especially considering that we are now full timing in this rig. I wonder how much the option is on the really big refrigerator?

Patty,
Allen is saying $2900, but I didn't think it was an option in the Montana, and I think it's standard in the Big Sky.

The $2900 number came from the order form that Shane from Walnut Ridge RV sent me. The actual number is $2940. Of course this is retail not what the real cost would be with a 5th wheel wrapped around it and discounted. I have asked him to quote me the unit with and without the refrig. I will share the difference when I get the number.
Thanks for all the input. I knew this was a great place to ask these types of questions. We sure are getting anxious. Had an offer on the house, but it wasn't the number we wanted. We had to tone down our excitement about going full time, with the reality of doing so with no debt. Hope to see you on the road this summer.

We have made do with the standard refrigerator for 8+ years of full timing and it has worked for us. You adjust to what you have. Every family has what it needs.

We find a 5 cu ft freezer is the answer--only about $150 at Sams. We don't miss the recliner but would sure miss the freezer. We originally got it to bring back fish from Alaska--check that off the list--it worked great and we discovered what else we could do with it! But as with everything else--everyone can decide how to handle this situation.

I finally got the quotes from 3 dealers, 3 more have not provided info and do not appear interested after repeated phone calls from me.
It appears that the offered price on the 12 cu ft refrig is a little under $2000 versus the list of $2940 or about 32% off list.

Alan,
I'm still not sure how the 12-ft applies to the Montana line. Montana doesn't offer a 12-ft except for Big Sky. To make one fit in the Montana would require signicant cabinet work including blocking the kitchen slide window.
Are you getting offered something I'm not seeing in the brochure?

I too would recommend getting a bigger refrigerator. The DW is always short of space on the standard one we got with the late 2006 3400RL. The only downsides would be is the extra weight and what other space is given up. Might take a little more power.

In our experience, 8 is adequate but 10 would be much better. One thing most dealers do not do is understand the 8 footer is part of the base price. If you pay for a 10 footer they should credit you for the 8 footer they do not have to install. Our dealer would not credit it, so we stayed with the 10 footer.
$2900? Is that a side by side? In July 2006 the 10 footer with a freezer door and refrigerator door (looks just like the 8 footer) was $1500.
Also, in case you're wondering, the 10 and 8 footers are the same width. The difference is in depth of the cabinets. I don't know about side by side.
I should add, we've been fulltiming 6 years as of the 21st of this month.

The 12 cu ft is a 4 door side by side unit. When you open the lower section (fresh food) the inside dimension is 27" wide x 11" deep. The freezer compartment is two sections approximately 12 1/2" wide by 11" deep. I did not measure the height of either the fresh or freezer compartment.
