Prior to disconnecting anything, I took lots of pictures so that I could put it back the way I found it.

1. I used my x-chocks to support the weight of the slide
2. I used a zip-tie to mark the links so that I could get the chains back on the gear in the exact location
3. I used bungees to keep the cable tension on the pulleys
4. I only disconnected each chain on one end.

Oh yeah, just remembered, you have to bring the slide in about a foot in order to get to everything and give yourself room to work, that's the reason for the x-chocks otherwise when you take tension off the cables, the slide will dip.

Changed mine out today. Wasn't too bad, probably less than 1 hour. Thanks for the tips. The disappointing part is when I took the old gearbox apart. Pretty cheaply made, no bearings, just an aluminum case bored out to accept each gear shaft. One of the gear shafts wore an oblong hole in the case until the gears became disengaged. Less than 2 years old.

Glad to help, I share in your disappointment. I saved my old one but haven't spent effort yet to replace faulty gear. Maybe if there was a rebuild kit.
