Type of Sealant to use?

I'm going to be replacing the plastic exhaust vent cover on the side of my RV for the microwave exhaust fan because it has turned yellow and stands out like a sore thumb against the white gelcoat. I scuffed up the new cover and painted it using white Rustoleum paint for plastic to keep the UV ray from fading it again.
My question is what is the right sealant to use when I install it? Silicone, acrylic, butyl, Dicor, Butyl tape, etc?

How was it sealed originally as OE? I think you could do it a few different ways; put butyl tape under it, screw it down and trim the butyl; do the previous then seal the edges with some pro flex or just put the vent back on and seal the edges with pro flex. Whatever you do I would not use silicone - it is a pain to work with to install, remove or maintain. You can get the pro flex in various colors to work with whatever you have. If you can't find pro flex you could use dicor non sag as well.

I was going to do the same thing until I looked at replacement plastic vent. The new one was flimsy so I painted the old one and it looks brand new now!

I was thinking about painting mine but since I had to take it off anyway to paint it I didn't want to use the old one. I researched and got the OEM part number and bought it off Amazon. It's made by vent line and it's not flimsy. It's the same as OEM.

LEXEL Clear. As good as it gets for something visible.

I ended up using 3/4" wide white butyl sealing tape. I applied the tape all around the vent flange leaving about 1/4" space from the end so it didn't squeeze out when I snugged it down. Then a masked off all around the vent and ran a very thin bead of white 100% silicone sealer all around the vent. Only thing left to do is touch up the screw heads with white paint.

Good Job Mike! The reason for the vent or any other plastic item on the outside of the unit yellows is because they do not use virgin plastic to make it. They use reprocessed plastic to make them and it will yellow every time with age. I plan on replacing mine with a metal one next time. I've seen them around and they are about the same in cost but SUPPOSEDLY they are guaranteed not to rust. We'll see! Using the butyl tape was a good idea and it will keep the seal.

Thanks. Yeah, the OE was put on with just seal tape. I didn't want to install the new one with just butyl seal tape all the way to the end of the flange because dirt and grime would have stuck to it and in no time at all I would end up with a black dirt ring around it. That why I stopped 1/4" from the edge and seal around the edge with 100% white silicone because nothing is supposed to stick to it and it should stay clean and white.
I also scuffed up the new one and painted with white outdoor paint for plastic (before I installed it) so it won't yellow (hopefully)..

Try spraying the new one with 303 protectant. it may keep the new one from yellowing

I've been using 303 for years on all the black plastic trim on my vehicles. I don't think it is made for painted surfaces.
I painted the new vent with white UV resistant paint for plastic so it shouldn't turn yellow..

I have had success with using a spray cleaner with bleach. The chlorine takes the yellow out.

Use simply awesome from the dollar store. Wear gloves, it will be white again. It works on any yellowing plastic
