New guy

I have a Montana 3121rl on order. We live in Simi Valley Ca. and I am retired and we plan to travel as much as possible. I am looking for help on the truck I will use to tow the rv with. I ordered a cummins 3/4 ton that comes with a dodge Ram but believe I may need a 1 ton. I will look for the proper place to ask about this in other areas of this site. Thanks much and I hope to see many new friends on the road.

Your trailer stats:

Shipping Weight 11999
Carrying Capacity 4351
(11999 + 4351 = 16350)

Hitch 2350
This is the shipping weight with the trailer empty.

Length 35' 0"
Height 13' 4"
For a 3/4 truck, towing a fifth wheel, this will probably not cause any sway or sway feeling. The height -- 13'4" is the same on pretty much all Montana models.

Fresh Water 66
Waste Water 49
Gray Water 88
LPG 60
Tire-Size ST235/80R16G

According to this site: Click here, you should be fine (on paper).

Max payload: 3060 lbs
Max towing: 19,680 lbs

(if this is the right truck your getting).

Maybe real world 3/4 ton users will chime in.

From the numbers published, it looks like you'll be fine.

If you are going to buy, buy a 1 ton. The costs differential is negligible and it provides a more capacity.

Go with the 1 ton. That is too much trailer for a 3/4 ton. 16350gvw trailer at 20% pin = 3270 in pin weight alone if fully loaded. And over the max payload of a 3/4 Ram - looked at lots of them. My 3/4 Ram had a payload of 3090 with gas engine, the diesel will be less. Here's a link that will help you see what the differences are. The page I pulled up is for a 3/4 ton, CC, 4x2,SWB - those parameters can be modified but you can see how low they are. The diesel does a number on the payload. This little calculator is pretty darn close in all of my looking around.

Edit: I've got a 1 ton gas Ram and there is no way I'd put that trailer behind it, gas or diesel. It needs a dually.

Thanks the payload seems to be the problem for the 3/4 ton.

The unloaded hitch weight is 2350 lbs. That only leaves 80lbs for me, my wife, hitch, and fuel. For legal reasons I feel it is best not to exceed the gvwr of the truck. Thanks for your opinion. This site has been a great help.
