Something new to worry about

So I'm down at the storage lot checking on the Monty. It's only been a few days, but you know how they get lonely. Some disrespectful bird had started building a nest in the pin box on top of my nicely rolled up electrical cord. Luckily I got to it before the bird had laid any eggs.

Birds love those pin boxes. If you have a step ladder hanging on the back ladder they like those for nests too.

Been there, done that, at one point I resorted to fashioning a screen cover to keep the winged creatures out.

So in California you would not be able to disturb them until baby's hatch and finish flight school! Plus permits to dismantle bird nests, well they are issued by lottery !

I have a piece of foam rubber stuffed in mine to keep them out.

Had the same thing happen with the birds nesting when we stored the Monte outside but now in the new "Monte House" we don't worry about it! Wait till you're out on an outing and you get a bird slamming up against the window trying to pick a fight with it's reflection in the window. Now that's a fun thing to see and hear!

Birds also like to "admire themselves" in the hitching mirror on front!

Yup, Carolina wrens love pin boxes. I use foam cushioning to cover the rear of the box and a piece of spaghetti tubing for the front. Also use this tubing to put along the bottom and sides of my bedroom slide. The tubing is the same you see kids using as a float toy at pools and beaches.

Use some window screening not plastic to cover up the hole. You want to let it breathe and not hold moisture.

I used to cover my tires when storing in outdoor lot but after finding black widow spiders every time I took off the covers I decided to forget the covers.

I think I'll get some steel heavy 1/4" screen and tie-wrap it in. I bought a big tub of tie-wraps years ago and can't seem to use them up. Now I have a use for 4 or so every time I come back from camping.

We have trouble with the Carolina wrens too. Love em and they eat stink bugs.

About 3 years ago I took a nest of 5 babies on a 90 mile trip to a campground to the coast. Felt really bad, as mama had obviously not traveled with us. They would have starved to death the week we were there, so I had no choice but to let them go. Either they would figure out how to eat or they would be eaten I guess. They were fairly old babies, so I kept assuring myself they survived. Now I also block off the opening in the hitch each spring. So now they build nests in my gas grill!

I took some aluminum sheet and fastened it together with pop rivets to form a cover that fits over the back side and the bottom to seal it all off. it is held in place by thumbscrews (2) that screw into nuts in wood that i epoxied in the big holes on each side of the pin box. Will take a couple of photos in the morning and post them so people can tell what i am talking about. John

I'm trying something new this Spring. I have one of those plastic owls hanging just under the pin box and so far...so good.

. . .either that, or hang a rubber snake there, should scare most birds away, especially moving due the the breeze. Heck it might even scare the crap out of you if you forget you put it there!

I found a bird nest in the rear bumper of mine, gone through the vent hole and set up house in tank hose.

Guess I will use the screen method to block those holes as they do need to breath.
