LT Tires on Big Sky

I was brousing the Keystone factory site and noticed that the Big Sky option now lists light truck (LT) G rated tires as part of the package. I am in the process of replacing my Goodyear Marathon tires as they fail but will consider going with a set of LT's, as I know many have done already, and specially now that the factory is using them.

I wonder if they are GY G614's? In the online brochure the picture shows an E rated tire?
It would be a nice option over the china bombs.

I just put Goodyear LT (made in the USA) on my Monty. I was relieved to get the Mission tires off of the rig. Did my first trip with them this week (at the Oregon coast now) and all went well. The only problem is that instead of a 235 80 16, they are a 235 85 16 and with the slightly bigger tire, one of my X chocks will not fit between the tires to lock the rig from moving. My smaller X chock still fits but one is slightly bigger and is just too big now.

I looked at a 3150 with the Big Sky Package and it had the G614's on it.

The Goodyear G614 is not a light truck tire, per se. It is a trailer use tire (per their website: DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY TO HANDLE THE DEMANDS OF TRAILER APPLICATIONS). Unlike most LT tires it also has an RST nomenclature instead of a single R from most LT tires.

I think because the ST has had so much bad experience recently, they did some funniness with the name to make it look like an LT, but it really isn't fully an LT but it's certainly better than an ST. It actually also has better ratings than most STs, for example, a maximum speed of 75 mph and there are 14 plies in the tire providing the G rating. ST & LT have different sidewalls too (stronger?, stiffer? not as flexible?) but I just don't know enough to describe them and don't know if and how the G614 improves on that.

This tire seems to be a hybrid. However, from the speed rating alone (75mph), I would not use this LT tire on a truck even though it can be used as a dually.

It does seem like an awesome tire for the trailer world compared to the ST.

I think Art must be on the right track. The Big Sky tire is likely the G614 which is an ST tire (GY calls it an RST) with superior specs. If this is the case Montana is being inaccurate when they call it an LT tire on their site. It looks as if they are staying with the Marathons for another year unless buyers specify the Big Sky package.

Our 09 Big Sky did not come with the 614's but we put them on about 5 months after we got the rig, after the China bombs failed. So far, best trailer tires I have ever owned!

We do not have a "Big Sky Package" yet on our lot. But from all I can read and see on the website they are equipped with GY G614s which are not LTs. I am unable to find a dealer in the stste of NC or SC that has one in stock. I really would like to see one.

I am considering the G614 as well to replace my Marathons which I believe are what people refer to as China bombs. No problems with them yet but if I have the China Bompb tires, I want to swap them out. What is the going rate for the G614s? I live in Western Mass and haven't found a dealer yet that carries them.

Washley1.... Did you go to a higher spec. wheel when you went with the G614's or just keep the pressure around 80 = 90 PSI instead of going to the 110 PSI the G614 is rated at.??

I just put G614's on yesterday. Here in Calif at a Goodyear dealer, I found the best price (checked all over - Discont Tire, America's Tire, Les Schwab, etc) , plus they gave me $125 each for the Marathons, which were essentially like new. So, out the door, with new metal valve stems, taxes, etc. it was essentially $1000 bucks!

Luckily, my wheels were already rated for the 110 psi/3750 weight. I am leaving Monday for Canada, so will find out pretty quick how good they are - but I am going to enjoy not having the trepidation I have previously had with all of my rigs about Chinese tire failures!

I had a great conversation with an Indiana Keystone Montana rep earlier this week. He did confirm all BigSky packages ship with Goodyear G614's. He also mentioned the Levelup system WILL be offered as an option aside from the BigSky package beginning in the 4th qtr. They are rolling it out now to dealers, and indeed it is already offered as a stand alone option on their website.

Cheers,

Robert & Kerri

Just a note...

Last year I bought G614s. Tires are stamped LT235/85R16.

Just now went looking for them on Goodyear site and could not find them. Google has results for ...
RST235/85R16 at various tire shops.

Seems like something has changed in the designations. BTW they were never easy to find on Goodyear site and never found any dealer with that tire in stock.

The G614's I just put on Tuesday were made in May 2011, and are labeled with the LT235/85R16 designation. So would assume G614's are LT tires as opposed to ST tires. Most confusing thing I've been involved with!

Sorry, been off the grid for the past two weeks! Yes, we got new wheels as well, as the stock wheels were only rated to 85 lbs, and you need 110 on the 614's. Yes, it was an expensive upgrade, but worth every penny in piece of mind!

One of the nice things about the G614s are that they have a weight rating that is high enough to allow you to put in exactly the right amount of air. Goodyear has an inflation chart (by weight) that you can use to look up the correct pressure.

For my rig (Big Sky) at my measured weight, 100 lbs is the recommended pressure. That's what I'm using and after 14,000 miles I'm showing completely even wear pattern. I wouldn't put in 110 just because you can. There is such a thing as over inflation so you might just wear out the middle of the tread if you go too high.

I posted this in Tow Vehicles and feel it is germane here (and like pbhalin, we run the PSI of 105 for our specific requirements):

Quote:
quote:What sizes, ratings and types have folks been using on their 7,000 lb axles up to now?
We have been running 14 ply G-rated tires since we purchased our first Montana in 2006 on ALCOA aluminum rims with steel valve stems. When we purchased our Big Sky in 2008, part of the deal was to have the new E rated tires (and Tredit rims) swapped for our used G-rated tires (and ALCOA rims). We are currently running Gladiator QR25-TS 235/85 R16's after 5 years of running the old ones. They run about $225 per tire and in our experience we have have had no issues. Yes, they are from China, but in full-timing use,

Two trailers, 4 tires, 5 years, 30k miles, 0 blowouts - priceless!

We put our current set on in April of this year and our first set was put on in early 2006. We run them at 105 PSI.
