In the Navy they are called Gator Freighters. They carry landing craft, helos, and lots of Marines. They are part of the amphibious fleet, and as such are responsible for making landings where ever needed. They can land troops by helo, or landing craft, hovercraft, tanks or amtracks (amphibious tracked vehicles). They usually have a "well deck" that can be flooded and a large tail gate that lowers so the landing craft can exit... Dave

This ship replaced the LSD Landing Ship Dock, I served on this one and was more than likely aboard when this picture was taken in Subic Bay. I was on her from early 65 to Dec 67.

The Navy is coming out with a bunch of new toys, right now the first Littoral Combat Ship is undergoing sea trials in Lake Michigan. A very neat design combining inshore draft with destroyer speed and weapons. It also will be used like a small LPD. Here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Littoral_combat_ship

Hee! Hee!
BTW, as a Marine, I spent two years aboard a naval vessel, USS El Dorado (AGC-11) Amphibious Force Flag Ship, as a communicator, 1962-1964. In some Navy circles, I spent more time on a ship than some of the Navy members.
I really hope that the USS New York's bow has an opportunity to cut through terrorism.
