Our neighbor killed unhooking 5th wheel
One of our neighbors was killed this week unhooking his fifth wheel. From what I know he must have been between the front of 5er and truck bed and truck jumped out of park and crushed him. I don't understand why he didn't use the parking brake. He got himself into his pickup and went for help. Saw the mailman and he called 911. He died before help could get there. He will be missed.
This is a rural area and response is very quick. Fire department and ambulance are near.
Please be careful when hooking and unhooking.
While in Branson we saw a couple hooking up and she was standing behind the tow vehicle and the 5th wheel. We had to say something. They said they would continue because there was no other way. We tried to help them understand how dangerous and tried to teach them there is a way without someone standing like that but didn't do any good.

I'm sorry to hear that Dusty, what a terrible tragedy.
Hopefully your post will serve as a reminder to all of us, to use extreme caution when hooking, and unhooking our rigs.

We've observed the same thing. We "interfered" by telling them they could be hurt. But maybe, just maybe, we planted a seed and they will be more careful. What a horrible tragedy.

When we hook up we use 2 way radio's because the diesel truck is loud and if DW yelled not sure if I could hear. Friends laughed at us the other weekend when we got them out but at the same moment the campers next to us on leaving backed into a tree and demolished the whole back of the RV. Laugh all you want it pays to do what works for you.....

What an awful tragedy! Sorry to hear about anyone having a problem like that. It does show and indicate that you can’t be too careful.

Sorry to hear such bad news. I try to always use the parking break on the truck, and put the chalks on the Monty wheels before starting to do any of the unhooking. Don't want the truck nor the Monty to move.

Same here...in Park, parking brake for the truck and chocks for the RV. When hooking up it's the reverse, chocks don't come out until hooked up, secure and landing gear pulled up.

My wife has a relative living here locally, was having his wife back in, he was directing and she pinned him against the garage and broke both his legs. She said she hit the gas by mistake...Hmmmm.

We used to hookup the wrong way until someone told us this was dangerous. (Thank you, Joy) We searched for a new way.
The driver can't see the hitch in our case, a decal in the middle of the rear window which lines-up with a spot on the hitch makes it an easy one-person task.
