Trailer Life and Keystone

Just recieved my recent Trailer Life magazine. On page 10 there is another Keystone owner that wrote about his 2004 Laredo fifthwheel having postpowder beetles. Last month it was a Keystone 2004 Sprinter. This is quite an eye opener as our 2005 2955RL Montana had them also. Ours was made in 2004. I really think that Keystone had a problem with there wood supplier that year. Just wished Keystone would of taken the time to check into this. I thought it only affected Montana rvs but that does not seem the case. I just wonder also what other rv manufactures purchased wood products from this supplier? These postpowder beetles are very damaging insects and can show up if wood is not properly treated.

We just noticed some little holes in one of our cupboard doors. Our 3670 is also a 2005 built in 2004. The holes are confined to one board of one door. I do not think that they active any more, and the holes are not very noticeable, so I am not too concerned, but it does seem that there was some bad wood around at that time.

John, if you find fine powder substance then they are active and or more new holes. Keystone will probably send you a new door. We found them on the cabinet door also. They sent us a new door. We no longer have this unit b/c of this problem.

Be glad they are not made out of BC Pine trees.
By now all you would have left is a aluminum frame on 4 tires.
We've lost a zillion acres to the pine beetle over the last 10 years or so. (well maybe not quite that many)
Now they blame it on global warming.
and it all started with one little bug.

Has anyone seen these postpowder beetles who can describe what they look like? Now, every time I see an insect in or around this rig I'm going to wonder...

Steve, you will probably first see the fine powdery substance and small holes before seeing the beetle. Here is what another person found in his rv. The other is a picture of the fine powdery substance.

Steve here is another picture where they were first at the table then went to the wood on the slideout. You can see where the powdery substance is coming out of the holes.
Here is a link to information on these

Hi, I don't know if we have the beatle problem or not?
I have noticed that after the bumps & grinds of being on the road that some "wood particles" on counter tops in bedroom & kitchen....it doesn't seem to be "powdery". I just figured it was residue left over when the rig was built and they didn't use a vacuum to clean it up!
Where is quality control when u need them?
So, if you have them how can we get rid of them?

Thanks. I'll watch for the powder. Otherwise I don't think I could tell them from an ordinary water beetle.

John and Marianne, it is normal to get some sawdust. Hopefully that's all it is.

Steve, you will know if you have them it is alot finer than sawdust and you will certainly see the holes.

John and Marianne, I agree with Steve, it is normal to get sawdust. As for getting rid of these beetles here is another link with alot of info.

Thanks for the pictures. Ours was nothing like the scale of those pictures, but the dust was similar. At the time I thought it was wood filler coming from somewhere. We have not seen the dust for some time, and I think that somehow we dodged the bullet on this one, but a very fine off-white dust accumulation does seem to be key to identifying the problem. I don't think that you normally see the insects.

I found some "stuff" like that in my daughter's house - coming from the ceiling - even smaller holes!! I forced some ant spray up through the holes thinking maybe I'd just run whatever it was off - instead out coame some ants !!! I guess carpenter ants can level a house over time also !!

Yes, we had to deal with carpenter ants in our stick home, once. It required treatment with carpenter ant-specific pesticide.
