Allison Spin On Filter

Since we have an on going thread on fuel filters, I thought I'd pass on some info on the Allison spin on. Allison says to change it at 5000 miles, GM does not mention this change. When I changed mine, I did a little price shopping...$37 at Chevy. Got on the Allison web site and found the closest dealer...$7.60. Called the dealer back and questioned his price, he said he knew it was high, but could not change it. Also, at this time, only GM dealers are carrying Dextron VI required in the transmission. Hopefully WalMart will have it soon.

This is not a sales call but just so you know and for others the transmission oil is also avaliable from Amsoil and it is called Torque Drive. Its synthetic as is the fluid that is in there now. It's also GM and Allison approved. Al

Bert have you read about transynd. Check it out at the Allison site. Also when you do change out that filter make sure you clean the magnet that is on your old filter. Some time the magnet will come off with the old filter and some have been thrown away.SeeYa

I just noted thast my GMC dealer has changed his service instructions to specifically direct service people to the external filter only. Previously, I had to argue with them to make sure they didn't drop the pan and change the internal filter. Allison says the internal filter is only changed at overhaul.

Are you guys saying Transynd/Torque Drive are the same as Dextron VI? I don't want to mix apples and oranges, because the Allison comes with Dextron VI in it.

Good point about the magnet...over on the Diesel Place there is always somebody who throws it out.

CAT, my dealer told me that GM recommended the filter be change at 5000 miles or my first oil change. I guess the information does not get to everyone our they don't read half of it.

Bret Yes I was telling you about Transynd by Castrol. I know my 05 came stock with Dino oil not synthetic oil and on I'm at 25000 miles and I have dropped the pan and did add 7 new quarts of Transynd. This spring I plan on anding a deep pan and change fluid again, I should have near 90% Transynd at that time. Allison from what I've read has never said anything negative about mixing fluids.

Allison has documents of their own showing the "mix" scenario and the percentage of synthetic you have if you go through the gradual change over as discussed above. Without looking, believe it involves draining the pan two times to get close to all syn. It is fine.............there scenario is based upon using Transynd. If someone wants me to check it, I can. I have the Allison books in the garage. I used BG as I could get a better price on it and it was more readily available to me. I did change my internal filter as I don't buy the never change it until overhaul theory. I switched to the deep Allison pan so had to switch internal filter anyway to a long reach one. Definitely change your external no later than 5K miles the first time. Allison is adamant about this.

I ran the standard fluid at the 25,000 mile change. Once I hit 50,000 miles I had my dealership switch it over to synthetic. They used 7 quarts of synthetic and the rest standard fluid. I will be heading in for the 75,000 mile fluid change in about a month or so and the shop said at that time my tranny would then be 100% on synthetic fluid. I also run my front and rear differentials on synthetic fluids. The rear already came that way, so I switched the front to match.

Take care GM does not approve of the transyand.. Last time I checked Allison said yes OK but Gm will not warranty it. Your choice! So I get the GM approved fluid. and 06 and newer is diff then 05 and below. So until my warranty is up am not going to chance it as I don't have the funds to fight GM.

Ps I was Allison said that about GM. Also as the GM regional rep and he said the same. doesn't make sense to me. Allison uses nothing but transyand accept for GM's 1000 series. then mercon 5 for 05 below and VI o6 and above.

I'm not total sure that your 02 Chevy has one/ It would have been around the center feed nipple that the filter screws up on, or it would come off with the filter. Your parts man I'm sure can tell you if yours should have one.SeeYa

There definitely should be a magnet on your 02. It sticks to the filter, so it is easy to discard it by mistake. It is pretty powerful - won't fall off on its own.

I'd take a look at http://dieselplace.com/forum/ and search for it.
I'm sure there are a number of sources - most likely the local Allison dealer among them.
