The big rumor
On CNBC yesterday, I heard them say there were talks between Daimler/Chrysler and General Motors about GM purchasing Chrysler. Now that possibility should make the speculators go wild. Chevy with a Cummings? GM Jeep? GMAC New Yorker? Go crazy....

YEP. There are talks between the two about a possible merger for a sport utility vehicle right now. I wonder if they will push it further.

What I saw on the news this week was that Daimler was looking to rid itself of the loosing Chrysler line. Now the rumor was that General Motors was looking to merge with Chrysler. But most experts say that GM and Chrysler's lines are too much alike, dealerships would more than double and be just across the street from one another, and the financial burden of Chrysler would hurt GM right now. So I feel it's just that...a rumor.

Yes, For some reason this old story never dies. Cummins is an independant company (stock listing is CMI). The top ten list of institutional holders of CMI stock does not include anyone associated with anyother automotive company. There is no one on the board of directors from Ford GM or anyone else that would support such a rumor.
As to the GM Chrysler rumors, Daimler Chrysler stock was up ( a seven year high) based on the rumors but the analysts suggest it is unlikely to happen. Can you imagine the mangement problems trying to drag both operations up from the depths? About the only advantage to GM would be a boost in market share albiet, probably temporary.

I think the 'Ford owning Cummins rumor' is caused by the fact that you can get a cummins in some of the larger Ford trucks (f750, 850 I believe it is). But they also use Catapillar in the F550 etc... Now then, I was reading in the financial news issues this past week that DM is looking at closing plants, etc.. and possibly splitting again. If that were to happen, several authors 'guessed' that there would be a rush to keep Chrysler from going Japanese but it is all speculation. Bottom line -- I have to many other worries right now - as long as I can get my 3500 Ram serviced correctly I'll plug along .

The rumor of Ford owning Cummins is due to a stock purchase Ford made in the'94. In '97 Cummins bought the shares back. Here is a clip from a dated article on that deal:
In 1994, Ford purchased 10% share of Cummins stock and currently uses Cummins B5.9 and C8.3 engines in their F-series trucks, larger than F550. Ford uses the Navistar Power Stroke engine in their pickups, that are F550 or under.
However, as of January 1, 1997, Cummins purchased back all of the original shares from Ford, therefore Ford no longer has any direct financial connections with Cummins. However, Ford still purchases some Cummins engines and are considered a very good Cummins customer.

Let me see, I am confused. How did we get from a rumor, proffered by the media about Daimler/Chrysler and General Motors, to a rumor about Ford and Cummins along with some snide remarks about Ford products which were not part of the discussion. Now that is staying on topic.

But behind every rumor is a little bit of truth. So we will have to wait and see what shakes out as the truth

I want to apoligise for my first answer to this post. I resorted to how all the other forums are, as "my truck is better than yours." My first post in response to this thread, was a light hearted joke to a post, and I guess it wasn't taken that way. I only hope this forum doesn't resort to the way other forums are, where we attack others, post with no facts to base our claims on, and make the forum where it is not enjoyable. So, for my part in taking this thread that way, again, I am sorry. Did not mean to hijack thread either. Carry on.

Several years ago Ford owned about 20% of Cummins. When they sold their heavy truck division they sold their shares. When I worked for Cummins this what we told by management

Just so that no one gets the wrong idea, anything I say about other brands is said in jest. We all try to buy what we like and life is a series of choices so try not to take me too seriously on brands comments. I like Cummins: As my profile says; "I bought a Cummins, it just came wrapped in a Dodge". In the trucking field they're called "Come Aparts". Also I am aware some people would buy Chevy/Dodge/Ford/GMC if it had rubber band power as long as it had the right logo on it.

You know..if you really give it some thought these trucks/cars are all pretty much the same. Design, engineering, motors, etc. PR and marketing convinces us that they are different."Built Ford Tough" " Grab life by the horns" Etc.We have had them all and each one served us well. We get Fords now because we can get them on the X plan..that makes them the best for me. On a rainy day when there is nothing else to do..watch and listen to the commercials on TV for awhile, really listen..and you can see how stupid and miss leading they are. Yet that is how most folks buy things..
