Sue, I called and told them my shoulder had been designated as permanently disabled and I ask if I needed to bring my Dr's letter. They told me no, because by law they cannot ask if I'm disabled - or ask details, or something like that. I don't understand that??? But they told me just to come on over to their Park headquarters and pick up the pass. I not sure why they didn't want my Dr's letter, but I am bringing it anyway, just in case. That's what I was told, anyway, over the phone.

Maybe you can call a National Park headquarters and just check to say what they say, Sue?

Now, I DO know that in order to get a Handicapped vehicle tag (in Mich, anyway) you must have a distinct ambulatory disability, legs or lungs that won't let you walk too far... nothing else gets a sticker. But that did not seem to be the case for a Golden Access Pass. I haven't made over there, yet. Maybe I'll get over there next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

Go to any National Park to get one. Cost is $10.00 and it is good for life.

Is the Golden Access Passport similar to the Golden Age Passport?

Last summer in Colorado I was told by the camp host in a US Forest Service campground the federal government is looking at changing the Golden Age Passport to an annual fee card. He thought current card holders would be grandfathered. If you don't have one you should get one and hope you are grandfathered. Tax..Tax...and Tax again....

There is a Golden Access Pass for people with disabilities and Golden Age Pass which is for people over 60 (I actually thought it was 62). They will give you free access to National parks, such as the loop through the Badlands and Yellowstone, etc. They give you half off campgrounds which are run by the Park Service and Corp of Engineers. Most of these parks don't have a sewer connection, only a dump station, but those that we have visited have been wonderful campgrounds in very natural settings.

OK... Here's the deal:

I just got off the phone with the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park headquarters, here in NW Lower Mich. I talked to Joy (231-326-5134). She told me that the Golden Access Pass is FREE, and it is a lifetime pass. She told me that I could bring my letter from my doctor and then sign a form, and they give you the pass. They don't seem to be very strict about this... it's not their job to be "enforcers". They just seem to want as many people as possible to use the National Park system.

We also were told that the Golden Age will be changing but won't effect andyne that already has it. Sometimes it does pay to be old.

Now, Steve. You're trying to get me to reveal ALL my secrets. I just turned 62 in June and bought my pass in July in the Badlands. That's why I was pretty sure that the age requirement was 62.

That's my goal, to walk into McDonalds and ask for a senior coffee, and have them ask for my ID...

Where was I last summer??? Somewhere, I received a "senior" price on a meal without asking... they charged Cheryl the regular price... I was elated at the cost savings. Then I got home and all of a sudden my brain starts working, and I went, "HEY! Wait a minute!!!" (I'm 53.)

Be sure to get your Golden Age Passport if you're 62 or older. It saves half on the COE campgrounds and gets you in free to many National Park attractions.
