Many of us use Teflon pads instead. Try doing a search here at MOC, should find a few threads.

Here is another vote for the teflon pad, less mess and no wear on the surface of your hitch.

We've always used the Teflon pad but are having trouble keeping the new one on. We haven't tried the pounding with a hammer that DRHowell suggested but will before the next adventure.
Happy trails..........................

We've also always used the Teflon Pad. It's been a long time since we bought it (used the same pad on 2 trailers so far) but I believe they come in different sizes, just make sure you get the one for your kingpin.

I use a teflon pad but also put some "hitch grease" from walmart on the pin because it rubs against metal parts in the hitch. I think it is white lithium grease.

We also use the teflon disk and put white lithium grease on the pin itself, like Homeontheroad does.

Teflon disk with just a little grease around the king pin itself. Never put grease on the hitch. The teflon pad takes the place of the grease.

I use a teflon pad but also put some white lithium grease on the king pin and pivot point on the hitch because it rubs metal on metal. Just a little dab will do ya.

White lithium grease is available in spray cans for extra convenience. It's great stuff. I use it on the control linkages on my aircraft. Funny, I hadn't thought of using it on the king pin.

Another vote for the teflon pad. However the problem with the lithium grease (which is great stuff) is the accidental bump against the kingpin... very messy. I use a dry lube from Caterpillar they use on slide mechanism on motorgraders. Works great I have no noticeable wear and does not make a mess. It is some kind of dry graphite lube. Any Cat dealer will have it. I will bet that there is another product someone here can recomend that will be easier to get. I go the the Cat dealer pretty regular so no problem.

One more vote for the teflon pad. I've used one for years, I had to replace one on my last trailer after it finally broke, but I think that was due to the tripod, not the hitch.

We use Teflon ring and wheel bearing grease on pin, wheel bearing grease is really sticky to stay where you put it.

The Cat dry lube is very similar to the slide lube most of us already have. Actually may be the same chemical compounds just a different name.
