For all RR buffs

She's home. Our old 611 J class steam engine is home. She was built here in Roanoke Va. She is the fastest passenger steam engine ever built, able to sustain 110 MPH. The largest single steam locomotive ever built was built here. It was just shy of one million pounds and 5000 hp, when fully loaded ready to go. There was 14 class Js built the 611 is the only one remaining.
Yesterday the 611 came rumbling up the valley puffing fire, blowing steam and smoke and sounding those horns. What a sound. Takes me back in time 60 years to when I was a little boy and our Father would take us over on the hill over looking the N&W and Virginian railroad lines on Sunday afternoon so we could watch the trains.

Did that too as a boy. Brings back many good memories.

You can see it at the transportation museum in Roanoke Va. It will be making a lot of excursions both east and west of Roanoke this summer and fall. If you are through here on I 81 take 581 to down town. It's on display along with 2 other LARGE steam engines.

That is really neat to see another one surviving. I had the privilege to ride on one in Vancouver Canada quite awhile back. Rode a ferry from one end of the lake to the other and then we were able to ride a train being pulled by a steam engine back. How cool.

When near Durango or Chama, the trains are a must adventure. Different packages for individual needs.
