Bath Sink

Hello, All

Has anybody replaced the bath sink, the one that comes with ours looks like a standard size and its plastic but it has that stupid drain plug instead of a stopper with a rod like the houses have and you cant just go out and buy one because the sink that comes with the unit has the down tube glued in so I will have to replace the sink. Has anybody done this or have any recommendations on what or where to buy. Thank you in advance.

That would be a huge task. My sink has a regular "set" drain that could be changed out, but then you would have to replace the faucet and have room for it to operate. You would have to replace counter top, faucet, sink since it is one with top, and have room to do it. One could attempt to mill out the sink to allow use of a normal "set" drain...but chances are it can't be done. I would say develop a liking for what you have. John

Yea that's what I thought. I've seen some units with a porcelain sinks some with plastic. I will keep it on the back burner for now.

Sounds great. I was hoping someone else had that issue and came up with an answer. Thank you.

For some reason I was under the impression that the bathroom sink and counter top are one integrated piece on the newer models? I may be wrong, have been before and definitely will be again. If it truly is changeable, do not tell DW as she is totally averse to the white sink!!

This whole thing is the DW she hates the sink and wants it changed, as for the one piece sink and counter mine is laminate with a plastic sink. standard size like the home.

You are correct, bingo. On montana models we have a composite bowl that is epoxied to the composite countertop material as well as removable drain fittings. So it seems that mountaineers are much different...our sinks are not removable. "A sink is not a sink when it is part of the countertop"...unless we are on the same page meaning replace everything in one operation. John

We have the same model as you and that is the next on my to list. DW hates having the plug in the sink and always takes it out. Then I worry something will get dropped down the drain and cause a bigger problem. I will try to post some pictures when done.
Just finishing up adding a medicine cabinet with a light above it and some shelving in the cabinet below the sink before I start on this.

That would be great because my DW hates the mirror as she is only 4' 10" tall, she cant see in the mirror at all. so I see a bath remodel coming soon. I look forward to the pictures of your remodel and thanks for all the input and great advice, it makes living in our Montana even a little bit more enjoyable.

Gcasta, I'd love to know how you removed the stock mirror. My DW is 4' 11" so it has to come down. I just can't see how it's mounted. My assumptions usually lead to damage.

My mirror was attached with double stick tape and small nails at each corner. If you look closely you should just be able see the puttied nail holes. I remove it by takng a flexible plastic putty kniife and slowly worked my way around liffting it away. It actually cam off pretty easy once I got started. There was nt very much of the adhesive residue left on the wall but I was not worried about that since I was going to replace it.

Here is a picture of the medicine cabinet that replaced it. I used the original mirror for the cabinet door. Also added a light above it on it's own switch to helped avoid shadows when looking in mirror

Very nice. So a couple of follow on questions, is that light 12v or 110? and how did you fish the wiring between the source, the switch and the light?

It is 12V. I removed the existing switch and put a double in and drilled a small hole below the sinkt to fish wire up to. You need to remove existing switch and look t see where framing is to determine where to drill. Is was a clean run from switch to below counter. Then I ran the wire along the bottom of sink counter then drilled another hole to fish wire up hole for light. I did not have to worry too much about feeding the wires since I had already cut the wall out where the mirror was to inset the medicine cabinet.
It would still be pretty easy to fish the wires without opening wall. Just determine where the framing is and drill between but be careful of vent stack. You will know where that is by where drain pipe goes into wall under sink.
To get the wire feed what I usually do,is use some dental floss or strong string with a small nut tied to it, mark the distance between the two holes on the string , lower it from the upper hole to marked spot the use a strong magnet to feed it out the other hole. You can then pull a heavier string back to pull wires or if an easy pull just use the orginal wire. I just bought the light from one of the online RV sights.

Sorry for such a long drawn out post bu wanted to make sure you got all the details.

Greg
