Have we forgotten?

Not a mention this morning anywhere, unless I search, about Pearl Harbor Day. Have we forgotten or is it because we took it out of the history books and our younger generation doesn't know. I had a lot of friends who lost loved ones that day.
Happy trails..............

So much for a day "living in infamy." I have become accustomed to seeing "Pearl Harbor Day" on the calendar...not so with the calendar that "was" hanging in our kitchen. According to that calendar, today is "Islamic New Year." Can you believe that?!

I just purchased the HBO mini series "The Pacific" with the express purpose of beginning to watch it this morning, Dec 7th. So far through episode 3.

Dave,
That is an excellent series. It was done so well. We really enjoyed it. Fox News finally has a piece on Pearl Harbor Day.
Happy trails..................

I guess it slipped up on me this year. I usually remember it. My uncle passed away on this date as well. Thanks for the reminder!

If you're on Facebook, we're flying flags at half mast, and honoring the veterans of Pearl Harbor and WWII by displaying service insignias for our profiles. My profile picture (picture that identifies me) at the moment is the U.S. Navy insignia in honor of my father's service during WWII.

I watched a documentary on it this morning, I made sure my grand kids know about it, and the flag flies at my house every day.
God bless our solders and their families. Thanks for bringing it up.

I will never forget, as it was December 7th that I told my father-in-law of my intentions to marry his daughter. The results were about the same...

I will never forget the generation that saved the world. My father and almost all of my uncles served in that war, most even got purple hearts but none were KIA. May God bless the greatest generation ever. It is a shame that the younger generations for the most part don't have a clue.

It was 69 years ago. Within the lifetime of many of us but history class and grainy black and white film to most of us. I was 4 years old. My Uncle Fred was there.Note that there are only about 120 survivors left of that day. They were the great generation that did and saw things unimaginable then came home and never talked about it. Everything passes into history but will not be forgotten.

My dad was a Navy Seabee that served on Peleliu island. He made it out OK. I still have a picture of him on a bulldozer repairing the runway with a Thompson strapped to the cab of the dozer. If you're not familiar with Peleliu, Google it. A heck of a battle took place there.

History is failing. Not only for WWII, but WWI and one of the bloodies wars in the history of these United States. The Civil War between the states, where a half million lives were lost. I guess there is just not enough time in the day for our teachers to teach history, even if only briefly. I asked a young person one day in conversation if they knew anything about Gettysburg. They were stumped. Next time I'll ask about December 7, 1941, and see what type of answer I get.

Fortunately every once in a while someone makes a movie or documentary on history, or relates history on one of the talk radio shows. "The Pacific," is one of those great documentaries. Another is "Band of Brothers."

Did you know that a navy officer, Amiral Harry E. Yarnell, wrote a naval exercise in 1932 to prove that Hawaii was vulnerable to air attack. Ten years later the Japanese used that exact scenario, and battle plan, to attack Pearl Harbor.

And let us not forget the "forgotten war," Korea.
