2001 Ford F-350 DRW Super Duty

I'm looking at this truck to pull 2011 3455sa It has 46M miles on it and has 7.3 PSD, 4.10 gears with auto trans and 4X4. Are there any issues with this year that I need to be aware of. We will be FT across the US and Canada the next 3-5 years.
Thank you for your knowledge and sharing your exoeriences.

I think you mean 46 thousand and not million on it. I have a 2000 and love it. I have a T-5 tuner chip,4 inch exhaust and Ford sever service air filter. We pull a 3475 at 65 MPH and it runs great. change the trans oil at 30k. The motor every 5-K. That motor is not even broken in at 46k. Mine was about 70k.

Yes I did mean 46000, Have you done anything to the transmission? That is my concern as many have said thta the trans is weak link. The truck does have a trans cooler.

Have an 03 F350 7.3L with almost 110K and pull a 3400 Model. Everything is stock. Have not had any problems, just normal wear and tear. I don't know how you could find an 01 with such low mileage. Oh yea, I did have ball joints replaced. I do think that the transmission is the weakest component on this model and is most likely the reason the tow capacity is around 13000 pounds where as the same year chevy's are more.

Yes the trans is a weak link and that is why I change it at 30000 intervals. I also have the pillar gauges and watch the temps and pressure. Any questions you can PM me and I will have you call someone that knows these diesels.

Bill,

I have the same truck with SRW. I have a 3665RE so just a little more weight. The truck will pull it no problems, but due to only 4 speed auto, you are going to find some speed ranges you can't maintain on hills, but it will get you up any hill you need to climb. Never seen any problems with automatic temp, but Ford doesn't have any gauges on it either. I try to keep the torque converter lock, which reduces heat build up.

If you are going to be in mountians a lot (like me), you will want to get exhaust brake (you will also need a torque lock on Ford about $200.).

With 46k, transmission should still be solid. The first things I would do with that truck would be to add a 6.0 transmission cooler, IMO forget the auxiliary coolers, pull the OEM , and replace with the 6.0 it is an easy replacement, and the single best thing to do for that 4R100 transmission, also guages ,transmission temp, EGT, and boost. That 7.3 will get the job done, they are a little slow in the mountains, but it will get you to the top. Exhaust brake would be nice, I have yet to add one, been towing with my 7.3 for nearly 12 years ( early 99 bought in July 98 ) I have come off some pretty steep mountain passes here in the west, so far no problems, but when I retire this summer, and start more traveling ,the exhaust brake is on my list.

Other things that I think benefit the 7.3 for towing is larger exhaust ( 4" turbo back ) better air intake ( IMO AIS is the best for stock 7.3 ) and a good tuner, DP tunes would be my choice, I have run a Superchip for years, and it does a good job, but I will be adding DP tunes in the near future, those tuners can be ordered with an exhaust brake added to the tuner ( electronic ) that sound like they work well. Good luck
