Totally agree, get the right tool for the job!

Even then, people will make different choices, and for some even a new 3/4 ton with the upgraded GVWR can meet their numbers.

Brad

BTW, for comparison; I am now out of the trucking game but this is the type of rigs I spent the first half of my career in. I still keep up my license and certifications for this and haul occasionally to help my brother and nephew, but it's a young man's game. This is my nephews truck, and the photo is without the booster and jeeps, so this is to haul a "light load". When fully rigged, there are 46 tires on the road. There are days I really miss it.

Now this is the right tool for the job that it does!

Will that think have enough payload for the 1/2 ton towable?

When you add that FW hitch weight to what's already on the rear axle/tires (people, cargo, etc.), you're in 1ton country. Some would argue a dually is needed.

A 3/4 ton gives a nicer ride than a 1 ton. 3/4 ton trucks are good for a small cabover, toys in the bed, pulling boats and smaller trailers. A dually will give a crummy ride empty. But allows for large cabovers, large trailers..I put our dually thru drive through fast food restaurants, some auto car washes, and nearly anywhere in a parking lot including the front of stores.. If the mirrors clear, so will the fenders if going straight.

They say you can never have too much tow vehicle and there is some truth in that. If I were full-timing across the country, I would definitely go with that perspective. However, for a part-timer like me there are other factors. I can get a 3/4 ton in my garage, but not a dually. The garage keeps my truck out of the weather and more secure. Since I'm just going to local lakes on the weekend, a 3/4 ton meets my weight requirements (pin weight is almost always the most restricting weight to watch on a 3/4 ton), but also allows me more freedom when trailer free (parking, drive-throughs, etc.). It all comes down to use, weights, and personal preferences.

Scott, I agree - there is a balance to be found by each individual. Glad to hear you've found what works for you!

I have a 3121, and loaded for an extended trip, my pin weight was well over 3000lbs. When I was looking at trucks (2017), I initially looked at a CCSB 1 ton and it had a payload of between 3000-3500lbs (I don't remember the exact number). I knew the 3121, based on loaded pin weight, not dry pin weight, would be at the limit of the truck, not including the hitch. I knew I also wanted to add an auxiliary fuel tank in the bed, and possibly a couple of small generators. So I knew I would definitely be over weight. So wound up going with a super cab dually. There are folks out there that pull the biggest fifth wheel they can find with a 3/4 ton truck and ignore the fact that they are overloaded, some way overloaded. But that is there choice. My truck is not my daily driver, so that was not a concern.
