Shore Power and Battery Shut Off

Maybe they all do but my '05 Mountaineer has a Perko shut off switch in the battery area. I was wondering, after I get get set-up and have shore power is there a disadvantage to turning that switch off to eliminate the batteries from overcharging.

I am probably missing something so all info is appreciated.

Thanks
Ray

The disadvantage is if you loose shore power and are away is some major appliances will not work. The following need 12VDC to operate the control circuits even though their primary function is using 120VAC:
  • Refrigerator
  • Air conditioner/furnace (on propane)
  • Water heater
  • The majority of your internal lights
If you have the batteries off and the converter is off (no shore power) none of the above will work. Also you are not "recharging your battery".

I think you will find most converters have a control / monitoring device that can be added if not with the original purchase. My replacement convert came with it. When I checked I found IOTA has one that can be added.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.
